Fixed one problem now got another.

Well, spent most of the morning down at the Zed fixing a power steering pipe to stop it leaking. after making sure everything was where it was supposed to be and everything was tightened up, i topped up the power steering fluid and started the engine. gave the wheel a few turns on full lock to make sure the air was out of it. turned the engine off. and now i have a water leak from from the water pump area behind the viscous fan?

Also have a small leak dripping down from the rear of the engine onto the oil sump?

I'm confused i never went anywhere near the water pump or the rear of the engine?

So looks like I'm going to have to give it a new water pump, is there any special precautions about changing one, i did try ringing JeffTT but he isn't taking calls at the moment.

Gutted, car is off the road after just 2 weeks of owning it due to a water leak :(

Seems to be the way of the Zed. :(

When I bought mine I had designs on fixing all the cosmetic bits and bringing it up to a decent condition, but I just seem to be firefighting the things that seem to break on a regular basis.

Only thing i can think off is after removing the rad cap, it looks rather rusty water, also noticed that it must of over heated before in the past as there is rusty water splash marks down the side of the engine bay on the side the radiator cap is. i have a feeling that when i moved the top radiator hose out of the way, Ive dislodged some crap in the pipe and its now stopping the water pump causing more pressure around that area, thus causing the leak.

Ooh the fun of removing the lower crank sprocket.

Looks like I'm going to be changing the timing belt. tensioners, water pump, aux belts while I'm there, may as well do that while I've got everything apart anyway.

Water pump is on the front, probably a leaking matrix pipe mine leaked a bit untill I replaced it, buhlgger to get to if u haven't removed the egr valve

its leaking from the front, I've already removed the fan attached to it, and if you stick your finger just under the fan pulley on the pump, its dripping from around there.

on the rear its a small drip but i can only see it from off the sump bulge. but that's even less of a drip.

Front is dripping once every 3 seconds or so, the rear is dripping once every 20 seconds or so. but if i drive it, if it came up to temp the pressure would force it out in a jet. so not even worth risking it. fixing a water pump leak and a possible turbo water feed / heater matrix pipe leak is a lot better and easier than changing the Head gasket. so i know what I'm going for :D

Hi Ian,

Have Pmed you now, is the water leak when the engine is running or after it is turned off after a run? water pumps tend to leak after a run, the small rubber hoses above leak when the engine is runing.

If it is the water pipes its a whole less of a job to put right, the water drips down and makes it difficult to see which it is.

Hi jeff, sent a PM back, but didn't explain it in the PM so will reply here.

There is no water above the water pump, its dripping down the lower belt cover and leading up to the pulley wheel thing that the fan attaches too.

I need to flush the system anyway as the water looks very rusty so its easy to spot as well.

I still have to trace this rear leak also, but ill be having a good look when i pull the plenum for that one. my main concern is the one at the front as its dripping quite fast with the engine off.

hi there just wanted to ask the powersteering pipe leak is that a common problemon these cars? by the front right of the bay?

I replaced the water pump recently due to the exact same symptoms, turned out to be a tiny 1mm split in one of the two hoses that are behind the top metal water pipe attatched to the front of the engine, they were both heavily cracked so I replaced them both :(

i wouldn't call it common, (although I've had it now on the same pipe on two different cars) the first time i had the leak was due to my own fault of leaving the power steering pipe and pump on the car when i did the engine change. i had to move the pump out of the way when putting it back in, and along the pipe in question there is a metal join at a bend, this metal knuckle ended up cutting into the pipe causing it too leak.

This time how ever it was just corrosion that did its work on the same knuckle.

Jack the car up, and in front of the cross member held on by two metal clamps with rubber in it, is a power steering pipe, if its leaking from this pipe, then its most likely the knuckle the knuckle will be partly covered with a foam tubing. and if yours is leaking it will be collecting in this tubing and leaking out. how often do you have to fill it up with power steering fluid?

If you get the pipe and the fluid. your more than welcome to pop the car down to me and ill change it over for you.

Right, i think on that note then, ill check them first, didn't see the little pipes behind so cant rule that out, really hoping its something that simple, but then that would still leave the one at the rear, but i can tackle that when removing the plenum to change over for my polished one.
