Ok going to be tackling a plenum change at some point in the very near future, going to fit the polished one that's currently sitting in the boot of my black TT, i have spare throttle bodies and would like them polished up as well, but haven't really come across a very good clear write up about how to go about polishing. I've tried sand paper with different grades and all it seems to be doing is making a mess lol, so before i tackle the ones that are actually on the car is there any very good guides or hints and tips?

I don't have a dremel. so hand tools only at the moment.

Also what and who supplies the gaskets and possibly pipe work I'm going to need when doing it, as I'm sure that at some point I'm going to be splitting 19 year old rubber tubing getting it off.

yes im sad being up at this hour thinking about ways to improve my car lol

Hi Mate, get the gaskets etc from MJP, i got all mine from Mike.

Its a shame your so far away i have all the power tools to do the job lol.

If you have a drill, you can buy an abrasive wheel, which is impregnated with silicon, using that will get the top layer down. Or a flapper wheel, 80 grit upwards etc.

You may as well do the plenum water bypass while youre at it. Write up in the faq section.

Yep had a look at the water bypass was looking at the Post JeffTT put up with the pictures showing the routing. is there any water pipes going into the front of the plenum id need to reroute? as i seem to remember a series of small metal pipes running along the underside of the plenum when i tugged the one of the knackered engine, but at that point i wasn't looking to put it back on as the engine didn't work lol

Thanks black-zed very handy site that, book marked, from what i gather some of there items can be attached to a drill.

yes you can buy drill attachments and mops which i used to do a plenum but killed 2 electric drills in the process i bought the bigger mops for a bench grinder just after far easier to do that way if you have a bench grinder (although machine mart do them cheap)

You can get rid of all the water pipes under the plenum. They route to the rear water pipes on branches, which can be blanked/welded or use a piece of hose to create a loop.

 sooo the ones coming from under the plenum on the little pipes are useless? or do they serve a purpose?

You can delete those when you do the carbon canister removal.

When I did my plenum pull every hose was dried up and unusable. I bought them all from Z1.

I hate that job. done it sooo many times now i can have it on and off in an hour

Funny thats this topic comes up as I just pulled my pollished plennum off my NA today!

How bad was it, i remember trying to get the one of my N/A with the engine out and it was a right ball ache

it came off really easy, I did manage to get myself covered in fuel when i removed

the fuel filter, even after pulling the fuel pump relay and starting her to relieve the

pressure.

I was so busy pulling one side of the pipes that when it came off the air rushed in

the top end and flushed all the fuel still in the pipe out at the other end of the hose.

I managed to grap the other end leaning over the engine before it all came out then

I got stuck in a compromising position, I couldn't put the pipes down as they would

empty more fuel and one pipe was still attached to the engine so couldn't move.

And thats when i noticed the tools needed to pull the last bit off were out of reach.

I could have phoned the wife to give us a hand but decided not to as the risk of selve

combustion was too great.

I'll be more carefull next time.

Arrgghh its making me get itchy to go change it now, even though its now dark. but i need to wait till i get a gasket set. not sure id want to risk using a old one even if it doesn't rip taking it off.

  • 3 weeks later...
Think it's easier pulling than putting it back on !
