Got rid of the micra - we hated it!

Anyone got or had a 4 x 4? We need something bigger than a micra really. Kinda wishing we hadn't got rid of Marc's Celica now, but sort of considering a RAV4 or the like

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2042731.htm

looked like a decent car - anyone got any experience of these?

Brett's got a nice 4 x 4, possibly a Shogun, can't remember tho, and at the meet on Sunday he said he loved it

Personally with fuel prices how they are, I wouldnt touch a 4 X 4 unless I really needed one, or had an endless supply of Cash. only if you were intending to use it as a daily drive of course. ;)

Saying that, I always found the Isuzu Trooper 3.1L Turbo Intercooler a very good reliable 4x4. :D

Thanks he says he wants a car now so please ignore the above post - I;ll let him decide what he wants and when.....

If the fuel was putting you off a 4x4 , consider a diesel and run it on veg or bio, nice and cheap ;)

Hi Jane,

It depends on whether you want a "real" 4x4 or just a "soft roader." If it's just for normal everyday road driving; but with the added capability of dealing with ice and snow, then the Rav-4 is a decent choice!

It drives like a car most of the time, handles well if driven "enthusiastically" and the 2 litre 16v petrol can still 30mpg+ under normal driving. Plus 0-60 is only 10.5 or so as well. We're onto our 3rd one now - I bought Julia this fully loaded 2006 (last of the old shape) XT3 last month. I quite like driving it myself......

.....plus they are extremely reliable as well:yes:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Thanks all - diesel would prob be the preferred option - think he's spotted a nissan 4 x 4 he likes the look of, Vijay where do you get bio fuel from?

Richard, your wife's car looks lovely - significantly over our budget sadly. Maybe when we're both finished uni and qualified we could afford one of those lol!

The search for our cheap, good family car continues!!

Cheers Jane....!

I did have one of the first shape Rav-4s a few years back and that was bullet proof! They can be bought quite cheeply now, so I'd recommend one.

I've just bought a 4 litre Jeep Grand Cherokee the other day and am over the moon with it. Its got an LPG conversion and that makes it about the same to run as a small petrol car. Cost me £600 which was a frickin' bargain.

do you still need old gauge spanners to work on them

Make my own bio from waste veg oil, costs me 13p a litre ;)

How the heck do you do that?! Is it legal to use it?

its very easy to do . its not legal unless you declare and pay tax on it . the fact you smell like a bacon butty driving down the road can be a bit of a giveaway . engine runs much smoother and quieter on the veggy oil and its cleaner . only 200 calories per mile

Andyzx, you couldn't be more wrong mate. Perfectly legal as long as you don't use more than 2500 litres a year. Anything over and then tax is due. You don't have to declare it but you have to keep a record of what you use. You're also not allowed to give anyone any or sell it, if you do you need a waste carriers license and also have to pay tax on it.

It's much better for the enviroment and there are no bad smells with well made bio, trust me I've been using it for 2 years and no one has ever commented on any smells.

It's just amazing how many people driving behind you suddenly stop at the nearest chip shop!!

I was also going to mention about an LPG converted vehicle, could be worth it if you can find a good cheap one with all the proper paperwork.

Lol! I don't really fancy recycling chip fat!!!

LPG is a possibility. All I know is we need a family car SOON - 3 of us do not fit into a SWB zed and that's getting SORNED end of Oct then we're really fooked. Budget is only about 900 tops, and we have to keen an eye on the insurance as Marc's a younger driver....

if you go for an lpg make sure its got the certificate with it . im far from an expert on this but i believe insurance companies wont touch you if you havent got the cert . im sure theres a guy on here that fits lpg conversions . he,ll be able to put you right

I'll ask my friend Paul as he's got a BMW he's converted, plus he own's and runs Woodsports, so he knows the legalities of it I'm sure

Cheers

Currently I am looking at every car within 60 miles of home within our budget - its very labourious and dull!

Seems a good buy Jane - and looks a hell of a lot of car for £895. As long as there's no rust and it's been properly serviced, it should be fine.

If you have any Merc related questions, ask PaulC - he's a technician at a Merc dealers!!

Honestly not sure what it is we want - ideally somethinng reliable, practical but a bit fun, but not a gas guzzler. After all the zed is the fun fun fun car, what we really need is something half decent and all the above. Just sifted through 53 pages on autotrader looking for something in our budget that looks ok yawn.....

We're on our second X-Trail - very reliable and was great in the snow. I get about 40mpg out of it (diesel)
