Good question, I am SORNing mine at the end of October so thanks for posting this, will be interested in the replies. I was thinking I might take mine in and out the drive once a week if possible to stop things seizing, although steepish drive, rear wheel drive car, icy winter conditions might make this rather difficult....

Old army trick when they store their vehicles

1 take battery off

2 fill engine with engine oil

3 clean and wax the car, clean the interior

4 To prevent flat spots on your tires, you can always jack the car up and leave it on Axel stands

5 If you don't want to fill the engine with oil, take the spark plugs out, and put a bit of oil in the cylinders. then put the spark plugs back in

6 Do a oil and filer change before you store it. this can help eliminate acids from the old oil eating away at things

7 add a fuel preservative. also top up so as not to have air in the tank. Air = condensation = water = rust.

When you finally want to finish storing it

Don't for get to empty all the oil out and give it some fresh oil and a filter change while there.

Charge battery and connect.

take cover off

Start engine and go for a drive

first thing that springs to mind is to leave the handbrake off . i would also take the wheels off , deflate the tyres and wrap the discs to keep all moisture off them . another precaution would be to make sure its got plenty of antifreeze in so it doesnt turn into an expensive ice cube over the cold months. battery off aswell because a long winter without starting will kill it . a little charge every now and then will keep it fresh.

Take handbrake off, it will seize the shoes to the drums.

I take the battery out, but do not store directly onto a concrete floor put it on a piece of wood.

Surely much easier to drive the car!

I drove mine throughout last winter (apart from in the snow!) and the car was fine.

Sorry mate, it's my summer toy and I don't like it getting cold

no problem matey, and also take the hand brake off as already mentioned.

Well I have had mine now many years and both are uk models all I do is start the engines once aweek let the windows down to air the car check the levels put on a dvd sit in the drivers seat and wish for summer to get here soon, oh and I too take the hand brake off but not before first chocking the wheels lol

Mine stood for two years on the drive while i built a new house, only thing i did was diconnect the battery. Moved beginning of september to new house, connected battery turned key everything works on the button. Drove 26miles to new resting place and not a problem and still no rust.

Ceejay do you let your car reach normal temperature or do you just run it to circulate oil??

Cheers

don't leave it ticking over, especially if it's been stood for while, the oil pump at idle revs doesn't pump the oil enough to properly feed the top end, especially when the oil is thicker and cold, so you can starve the top end of oil, best thing in winter aswell, is to just get in it and drive it, don't leave it warming up. I just keep my foot at about 2 - 2500 revs for a while to warm it up if i have to....
