I'm buying some refurbished headlights that have 99 spec inserts in them (or they will have) I am unsure of what colour to do them to best suit my car.

I was thinking black, but silver has also been mentioned? Can anyone suggest any more/better colours.

Its to fit to my Silver SWB.

Bright yellow.....

I think the black on a silver car would just darken them too much, silver would be a better choice, or were you thinking about chrome?

^^Same thoughts as Vod`s^^, I would get them chromed or a very bright silver :cool3:

I`ve got black inserts on my vert and silver on my tt and would like them chrome, suits me sir

I wasnt thinking chrome tbh, mainly because the nice chap doing them for me wouldnt want to do chrome I dont think... LOL

So you think silver then? Im just not sure if it would be a bit much?

I used chrome fablon sticky plastic for mine, looks ok if you take your time, if you dont like the colour its not the end of the world to change it :detective:

Do one black and one silver, put the glass back on temporarily and mount them loosely on the car, then see what one suits it better.

They are hopefully coming yo me as a ready to fit item. I dont have the expertise or the time to be rebuilding headlights. I would just do my own if i did lol. Rather than buying them pre done. It'll be a big enough job to fit them for me.

Not sure on chrome, will go silver i think. Having said all that if i really dont like them I suppose it would be possible to change them at a later date although i'd need help lol

Its really easy to split the headlights open, 4 clips to take off and use your hairdryer to heat the glue up and then split the glass from the unit, stick the glass in the dishwasher and they come out mint.

Got to be silver :cool2:

I did mine with a chrome rattle can spray, I think they are somewhere between silver and chrome

I wasn't sure I liked them at first but I am 100% happy

I would not put the glass/lense in the dishwasher, they can get almightily hot in there, I would just stick with hot soapy water :thumbup1:

Taking the headlights apart and putting them back together really isn't that much of a ball ache, it seems daunting but really easy to be perfectly honest.

Just take the headlight off the car, take all the metal brackets of it apart from the ones under it (for the bolt and studs to fix it to the car) 5 metal clips on each headlight (be careful with these not to chip the glass) and the rubber breather pipes then either bung it in a 200 degrees oven for around 5 to 10 mins (you have to check constantly, you don't want it to melt in the oven) and using a very large knife, put that between the plastic and glass and twist. if the glue is supple enough the glass will start to lift. once its on its way just use a oven glove to take the glass off.

Or

Get a 2KW heater, stick it on its highest heat setting and go around the edges of the glass until you can lift the glass clear.

putting it back together is even easier, 3 G clamps with some wood so as not to damage the glass or with rubber ends on them, heat the rear of the headlight housing until the glue is supple enough, put the glass in and hand press it together. clip it with the metal clips that hold the glass normally, then place 2 G clamps about 5 inches apart from each other along the top bit of glass, then heat the sides and do the same using the clip from when you took the glass out.

On the front the plastic naturally hangs away from the glass, heat that up along with the glue. then hand press them together G clamp and 2 clips and then with the clamps and clips in place. go around the glass again to heat it up, then leave to cool, reattach the metal plates and the breather tubes and your all done

do them in vauxhall star silver without laquer. £5 from halfords and will only take 10 min :)

Silver it is then it sounds like!

Problem is vods is that I just dont have the time to be able to do things like that, im away from home sunday night to friday night normally and the rest of the time I'm with the gf.

Also complicated in that I still live with my parents, and annoyingly although we have a double garage and two work shops I'm not allowed to use any space to work/store stuff in. Its all taken up with dads stuff or stuff for the railway. So (I kid you not!) the only room I would be able to do this in is my bedroom.

In 6 years of driving I have jacked a car up 3 times at home - thats how little I can use the facilities here! Hell i got moaned at for getting tyre shine on the tarmac drive a few weeks ago! Cannot wait to buy a house, not long now - January!

Lol getting there, saving will be sorted by the end of december - then I start looking seriously.

I think its worth trying the black, because with silver it would just blend into all the car more which if you want that fair enough but with the black they would be another feature standing out, im going to try black on my red Zed. but be sure to upload piccys of the finale !

Hollings.

I'd do them in a nice Grey, like an anthracite....kinda like stock but more modern.

We're talking about the 99 inserts here, are we not? As opposed to the standard head light insides, of which the pictures posted have been? Personally I'd colour them 'see through'.... cos I can't quite see the point in 99 inserts... (IMHO)

ooooo touchie :lol::lol:

ooooo touchie :lol::lol:

sorry, didn't mean to come across badly, just slightly confused!

Definately Black.

I personally think the silver looks crap. The original supra had that and thats why they changed it to Black for the facelift model.

I also thought the chrome looked crap but i have to admit, it looks kinda cool on Daz's car.

+ 1.

I know Dave(Car Mad) put a lot of hours into this. I read all the thread and also what Daves Zed posted too.

But Im still not convinced that it adds anything to the car.

IMHO of course.

On a personal note, i don't think it adds to the look, or makes it look "modern" i love how the headlights are at the moment, putting a bit of plastic in that basically separates the headlights actually makes me think of cheap after market headlight jobbies. but that's just me.

Quavey go with what you want matey that's the best advice i can give.

Indeed.

Just do yer own thing.

We, the members of this forum are a diverse bunch.....

we can never agree on which variant of the car is best, which colour is fastest. which brakes to have, what spoiler to fit etc etc.

So we are never going to agree on these inserts or their colour.

What a great club tho....:cool2:

got the origionals in silver + some 99 inserts not painted or fitted yet. think my car looks good with the silver check out zx-eyes ride
