HI All,

Just got my car back from the Bodyshop and they've managed to break one of the dipped beam headlight bulbs :(

My car is a J-Spec 1995 N/A.

What i need to know is if i can get a Bulb from either Halfords or Motorworld as they are both local. I need one ASAP in case i get pulled by the fuzz. Any codes for the bulb would also be helpful.

On a longer term note, i want some HID bulbs for the car since i now have ultra bright LED sidelights and they make the yellowy headlights look out of place.

I know there are lots of varieties out there with different brightnesses and stuff and i haven't really a clue. What i want is some resonably priced and easy to fit. So what i'm after is just a simple link to e-bay so i can go straight ahead and buy some without having to contemplate too much.

All help appreciated.

Cheers

Peter.

Firstly your current bulb will be a H3C, ie; two prongs on the back of the bulb. I doubt you'll be able to find any locally. A normal H3 bulb will fit, but you'd have to fit an earthing wire to the small screw next to the metal clip that holds the bulb in on the headlamp.

As for a HID kit, take a look at this one, I've just bought a set of these for my Alfa.....

Again H3 fitment

Colour wise I'd go for either 4300k of 6000k, as they are the whitest (4300k is manufacturer standard colour)

Thanks for the Info Dave. Are there any HID Suppliers in the UK that do these lights.

A Link to a Decent J-Spec Nissan 300zx HID kit in the UK with resonable prices would be appreciated so i can just click and buy. If it's in the UK i may get away with not buying a normal bulb at all if the delivery is quick :)

Sorry bud...... I went straight to their eBay store and clicked the same 'TYPE' as mine, but didn't read it, they must have different adverts....

they DO ship from the UK, if it's delivered within the UK... so give this one a try.......

So just to set myslf right (Dum Dum Guide). I Click "Buy It Now", order H3C Bulbs at 6000k and they will just be a plug in fitment to swap straight over that even an idiot could do it (me)?

YEP!!

Apart from you order H3.... Not H3C, as you don't need the 'c' on the end for this.

They'll arrive all boxed up, take out your old bulbs, insert the new HID's (don't touch the glass). there will be a rubber bung already around the new wires coming off the bulb, of which there will be four wires... two to the bulb and two with spade connectors on. fit these two spade connectors into your existing bulb connecting plug and then plug the other ends into their appropriote plugs connected to the ballast.... that's it!! Straight forward, job done..... now turn on (preferably with the engine running) and see the results.

No problem bud.

If, when they arrive, you have any problems don't hesitate to contact me and I can help you out with them. Saying that they really are straight forward..... the only problem will be where to place the ballast, but these ones are a lot slimmer then when I fitted mine to the Zed.

Ok, got my HID's and am a little cofused with the wiring. Has connector for original lights but also has a positive and Negative wire coming out of it? Says this is power for the ballast. I thought it was a straight swap?

Do i need to connect these wires. If so, do they just connect straight to the battery or where?

Cheers

Peter

Did you get the ballasts in the kit? (small box with wires in and a connection on it that the bulb plugs into it, or did you get just the bulb replacement for a HID kit?

Sounds to me you do not have a HID kit installed on your car. in that case you would of been better off just getting the normal bulbs H3C if your car had them.

You will need a set of ballasts to get the HID bulbs working.

Jap spec dipped beam headlight bulb here. with out the need to add anything.

Got the fill kit mate including ballasts. from what i can tell (and i'm probably wrong), all i have to do is stick the 2 spade connectors (red and black) into the end ot the original lighting socket? is that right?

the kit and ballast litterally just extend the connection from the original wire to the bulb, all the connections should be self explanitory, but the only bit i was baffled with was the spade connections going into the sockets i didnt know which was + or -, so i took a leap, or small hop of faith and i found that the spade connection with the carbon or burnt look was the positive one on mine, but dont hold me to it :D

That's what i thought. I was baffled by the spade connectors as i was looking for an actual plug.

So how are you supposed to tell which one is positive and which one is negative then? is there a trick to it?

Edited by pbryant_knight

ya could stick a multimeter on matey? check which one is ground, or check which one is live.... or with a digital one, more than likely if you go across the 2 connections and turn your lights on, you might get a '-' symbol on ya meter, that means they ar

i found that the spade, that was burnt or had more carbon on it was the positive one, but i took a guess and guessed right, the assumed negative spades were very clean compared to the positive ones.

plug the connector for your normal wiring loom into the ballast, then run the ballast wire to the bulb, if you connect it wrong it just wont light up, if it doesn't swap the connections around and bobs your monkeys uncle, daylight in the dark.

yeah, should be idiot proof, they should have what ya call an 'idiot diode' in, does what it says on the tin :)

Well, when i inquired about the same issue at Zed world with JeffTT do to with Pablitos HIDs, jeff said just plug um in, if it fails to work swap the connections around.

you probably already know this but just incase . DO NOT TOUCH THE BULBS WITH YOUR FINGERS. hold them in tissue and give them a good wipe just incase someone else touched them while packing them up .

  • Author

Yeah, cheers. I always hold the bulbs in tissue. :)

Doub't i'll get it done today now anyway. don't look like the rain is gonna let up at all.

Got them all hooked up and thanks for all the help. They come on super bright then dim slightly? Is that normal? Also, how long do the bulbs last? Is it longer than regular bulbs?
