Not sure when this came into effect but it can't be right surely?

My mother in law is new to the whole ebay thing, she has just sold something on ebay for £729.99, now I told her to be prepared for Paypal to take there fee.

which of course Paypal have already done!

She's now got an account balance of £716.99

OK, so it was to be expected but I can't ever remember having to wait 21 days for the money to be available?

It's not even as if she can buy things using her Paypal account as the £716 is going to be just sat in limbo for the next 21 days.

and judging by Paypal's explaination, until she sells another 19 items the same 21 day waiting period will apply per listing

I've been using Paypal since it took over from e-cheques or whatever it was that ebay used to support, and I can't ever remember having to wait that long for funds to clear.

After the 21 days she will want to withdraw the money to her current account but that'll take an additional 5 working days.....so effectively, her first experience of ebay resulted in her potentially not seeing a penny of her money until a month after she made her first sale?????

That's just wrong!!!

thats news to me, sold a lot of items a few months ago and there was no 21 day delay:no:

It was news to me as well bud

to say that the 'long haired general senior' is less than impressed with my advice is an understatement!

I've had this once, about a year ago. They introduced it on what they consider to be "high risk" items.

The money is held by paypal until either the Buyer confirms the goods are received by updating their ebay item status (rarely happens in my experience) or if they dont receive any complaints about the transaction within 21 days.

its a ****ing joke

Its only a joke when its this way round. Imagine buying something for £700 and it never turns up, at least this way you as a buyer are covered.

It makes perfect sense, how many threads are there of the oposite where they want to get money back for stuff that never arrives and cant?

Sounds like a good step forward from paypal.

But I'm guessing that most people (and correct me if I'm wrong here) tend to use a card of some description for Paypal transactions anyway, so they're covered against that kind of fraud by the card company.

I understand that people need to be re-assured that everything is being done to combat internet fraud, however I don't believe in this instance that it's not just a way of Paypal making money under a different guise of fraud prevention.

Cheques and bank transfers from now on I think

maybe that'll save my poor ears from taking a pounding in the future

That's odd. I've just sold a Metro on ebay and the seller paid via paypal. I've already transferred it and Paypal has sent me an email saying it should be in my bank account within 3-5 working days.

Except your not giving any warning or notification about this. So when your selling an item becuase you NEED the money, then afterwards you find out you cant have the money for 21 days.

So there you are without either the item or the money. Great.

...and thats 21 days plus the 3-5 days time to transfer it to you bank if you so wish.

its only on certain items, and not on all transactions of those items anyway.

selling an item becuase you NEED the money, then

If you needed the money so bad (when I say you, I dont actually mean you) why are you not asking for the money to be paid direct into you bank account?

It must be a complete arse and I'm sure I would be fuming if it happened to me too, but playing devils advocate (and being an argumentative sod) I still say its about time paypal started looking after peoples money with ideas like this.

I think there is only one question here and that is "How many more millions do they stand to make if they hold on to randomly selected sellers' funds for an additional 21 days, and then justify it by saying that it's to protect the buyer?" At least they've dropped the charges to withdraw funds of than £50, in line with America, into your bank account. That has pissed me off for years!

Many people will only deal through paypal. Transferring funds to somebodies bank account can be seen as suspicious and risky.

But I see where your coming from, however as a seller I find ebay as swung too far in favour of buyers. They have lots and lots of protection for buyers, and sellers are left out in the cold.

A buyer only needs to lie about an item never arriving , or it was broken or not as described and paypal automatically freezes the funds in sellers account and gives the seller 30days to prove otherwise, otherwise the buyer gets item for free and there money back and seller loses out. Popular buying scam.

Sellers cant even leave negative or neutral feedback anymore, but buyers can.

I've had this too; only once though - on a mobile phone IIRC! But as soon as the buyer give you positive feedback they release the money

That is indeed what it's there for - I contacted Paypal to ask why. And yes; whilst it is inconvenient for the seller it is a bit of extra peace of mind for the buyer. So I can appreciate it as a bit of a step forward....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Same here, not a metro though!

Just sold a mountainbike, the guy paid by paypal last night, i transfered it

across last night, will take 5 days or so.

The guy has just been to pick it up.

Maybe this 21 day thing is until you are a verified seller?
