PICTURE ADDED I have a 91 slicktop. It's a tt Auto. Love the car but really want a manual. I've seen a couple of 2+2's on here that are manual and the right sort of money. Do I sell mine and go down that route? Or do i bite the bullet and do a manual conversion knowing i'll never recoup the outlay? Nothing against the 2+2's but personally i think the shorties are so much better proportioned. What do you reckon guys? Another pic post 26!

I know but that'll just be the start of it. Already convinced myself that the Group Buy coilovers are a "must have". Where will it end?!

You will never recoup the outlay on a zed, very rarely. Its a labour of love. The best thing is to do what you want to make it right for you, dont think of it in monetary terms of how much the car will be worth to sell.

Making it a manual will make it more saleable, should you wish to move on in the future.

Where will it end?!

If you're not financially secure and like half the petrolheads I know, in a pile of debt feeling miserable that you've spent 15k plus on a car worth 3k max, at which point your car will inevitably break down, then hating the car.

Nah, I think maturity and common sense has to come into it, value what it's worth to you in the long run before starting out on the journey. I've decided that my Z will be finished in 2 months time, I know what I want for it and I know when I'll be finished. I'll have spent about 6k on it probably but I won't care- itll be getting cleaned and stored from that point to keep her pristeen and will be replaced with a cheap day-to-day hatch.

All slicktops deserve a manual box. I would go with the manual conversion.

Its true you wont recoup all the cost, but a Manual conversion is not all money lost, typically a manual equipped Z will fetch anything from £500-£1000 more than a similar Automatic Z. Especially in a slicktop, where owners are looking for the Sportier drive it offers.

All zeds deserve a manual conversion, makes it a totally different car.

To be honest, out of all the things you 'can' recoup some of the cost on in terms of overall value, a manual conversion is probably the only one. It'll add £750 - £1k to it and will also boost its saleability.

Thanks guys. It's not all about just getting a return on my outlay, its knowing deep down that my car deserves a manual box and it would transform it, BUT.... It's just a bit scary spending another 1500/1600 on a 20 year old car. But i guess i wouldn't have bought it in the first place if i didn't think it was worth it.

Is the manual conversion the next step you'd take? For that money i could get the coilovers fitted, sort out the rear bushes which are worn and have the stonechip removed and painted. Decisions, decisions......

It's not JUST a 20 year old car though. You could say a 348 is a 20 year old car, you could also say a Nova is a 20 year old car. It depends on your outlook on things. I don't think £1500 is much to spend on something on a car of this calibre.

Good point, well made. You couldn't lend me 1500quid could you?

Also bear in mind that a working autobox and any oil coolers you have do have a value. When I converted my old zed I sold my autobox and oil cooler for £330 which certainly helped towards the costs. (I admit it was a rebuilt one, with a receipt etc but you should certainly get something for it!)

That sounds like a plan. I won't tell if you don't. Wherabouts in Nottingham? I'll fire it in the route planner and see if it's viable. Supposed to be at work but i can put that off for important stuff like this!!

I have to agree.

And it's definitely better the devil you know; so if you have a good ZX at the mo and want to stick with a slick shortie, then go for the conversion.

Hi Richard, i see you're based in Missenden. I am currently working at Gateway school over that way. Drove my Zed to work today as it happens. I'll be working there for another couple of weeks. If you want a micro-meet and wouldn't mind casting a knowledgable eye over it that could be good. Let me know.

David.

Cool - can do indeed David!! I'm always willing to meet a fellow Zedder and pass on what (albeit limited:oops:) knowledge I have on these beasts!

Drop me a PM and let me know when you're around mate. Look forward to hearing from you!

I saw a manual shorty advertised on PH and it was only 10miles away so went to view/drive it. I HAVE to do the conversion. A totally different beast and exactly what i was expecting.

And on another positive note made me realise how much i love my own car. It's far from perfect and needs money spending on it, but i'm slowly learning patience is a virtue! The slicktop is definately my fav version and mine is Cherry red too which i love.

BUT.......a mint 2+2 advertised on here that is within my price range and looks absolutely mint. It's an auto, but could convert that?!

Edging towards keeping mine, converting it and slowly doing all the other bits that need sorting, thus truly making it 'MY' car.

I will endeavour to sort some pics out so you guys know what i'm waffling on about too
