Emerald stand alone engine management system on a Z32 is now a viable and working reality.

All due to some research and experience by John Dixon following on from his successful installation of an Emerald system on his Nissan V8 engine. This also stems from my desire to move away from older generation fixed map ECUs and the neccessity of new chips with everything. So I bought all the gear with johns technical advice. John has made an adaptor loom which allows the use of the stock loom and ECU plug. He has also modified the Crank angle sensor(CAS) unit to accept a modified disc to allow the Emerald ECU to read it.

Today was test n try day!

First of all John helped identfy a couple of issues with the old stock loom/connectors which was stopping the engine firing. Once all was well on Nissan ECU we swapped over to the Emerald.

Almost immediatley it fired up:thumbup1: on a base map supplied. John then spent some time getting things running evenly and by 3 0clock today we had a fully running NA engine controlled by Emerald management.

I helped by making lots of coffee and bacon butties:lol:

To say I am happy is todays understatement.:nana2:

I will post up some pics when I tidy up the install.

No more MAFs for me!!!!

So its a huge thanks to John for a top job.:bow:

Soon we hope to be able to market this as a true plug n play system.

I now have two choices. Get the stock engine fully mapped at Emerald on Dave Walkers rolling road and get the car finished and MOTd or proceed to install the new high power engine first and then get it mapped,MOTd etc

i think its ryan doing the mapping now jaffa ....not sure though my mate Matty has had his skyline built and mapped there ....i did pm JD before and if i emember correctly he can map the AEM also ?? that loom looks the danglies , looking froward to seeing a tt with the emerald kit fitted up and running

That would make sense given the solaris ECU ;) Ryan maps mine too and he's a good guy

ATM from an ECU!!!

Yep, but have found a source for them eventually. As I have a pile of NA Auto and faulty ECU's I'm not likely to need any time soon I'll use them until they run out!

And then we can start one the ones I have!!.

You wont have to wait long......:winkiss:

looks like nobody wants to see my NA with Emerald on:cry::cry:

thats OK ... I can handle rejection:glare:

I wanna see a well sorted n/a car with the Emerald set up on.N/a cars are a better drive when tuned properly like yours will be

So... now i have to save for a clutch and an engine management system....

Oh well........ funds start now...

Good work fellas....

Al. :thumbup1:

Is this only an advantage for hi tuned cars?

Not much point for a stage 1 zx like mine, just a basic tune up will do??

Well can you just pop up next weekend and drop the new big engine in pleeeze?????

Cos I wanna see a well sorted NA car with Emerald too:thumbup1:

Its an advantage in as much as you get the extra features like full throttle shift, switchable maps etc. If you don't already have a boost controller then it will do that too so you will have better spool up.

In terms of power you will gain a little over a re-tuned stock ECU as you can ditch the MAF / Tee piece and run twin filters but it's not going to suddenly find you 50bhp over a well mapped stock ECU

Got the first TT setup done today

Many thanks to BazzaJG for taking the plunge! One minor (and smokey) issue at first because I read the terminal numbers wrong on a relay :xxx: but other than that pretty smooth really.

Fittment took about 6 hours total but prob lost an hour with the first issue then a good while trying to find the boost solenoid wiring which had been very neatly tied out of the way. Also converted the CAS today as didn't have time to do it in advance. I reckon anyone with basic skills could do it in a day easily. The actual ECU is plug and play but you have to mount MAP sensor, air temp sensor etc. too. I'm doing a full installation manual to go out with any supply only units.

Anyway we went as far as getting the car setup and idling on the Emerald then took it back off for the drive over to norfolk for mapping - hopefully in then next few weeks :thumbup1:

Lovely car, another Phil (ex CS Woods) job - all his stuff is done to a really good level of prep, never any clips missing, pipes out of place or anything.

Can't wait to see what it'll do on the dyno now.

Good news then all round John.Martins should be even easier with one under yer belt.Be nice to see you again when we get the install under way :cool3:

Looking forward to mine getting done.. cant wait its all very exciting

It is all very exciting Martin.

I share that with you.

my project has been on hold since the Emerald was fitted as I decided to help Bob genie with his car/project.

i am just waving goodbye to a LHD 240Z which has been another long term project of mine. Its off on a trailer to France today. My "French connection" is going to market it for sale over in Europe.

Im having a week off to go to Spain this week then I will be back to finish my slicktop and get it off down to Emerald to be mapped.:thumbup1:

Yes cant wait, Jimmer seems to be making super hero progress on my car at the moment ,so fingers crossed I will have a working zed at long long last quite soon.

Looking forward to getting it done too Martin! Have a base map oddly off a very similar spec swedish Z that made 680bhp @1.7bar so should be a good starting point for yours.

Joley: Yes, it eliminates the need for an EBC, ECU can manage that too.

Mapping only needs to be carried out when you make any major changes to the car really.

Cons: Obviously it costs something to buy and fit.

Pros: Easier and more consistient to map than a stock ECU.

No MAF sensor so gets rid of the hassle/cost of dual intake on big powered cars.

No need for seperate EBC

No need for seperate Traction Control

Full closed loop fuelling if wideband lambda fitted.

EGT feedback as option

3 switchable maps

Fixed cost mapping at Emerald - cheaper than dyno hire alont from some places.

Many other functions such as full throttle gear shift, gear specific boost control, auxillary control for Nitrous, intercooler sprays, exhaust bypass etc etc.

I meant its more consistient TO map on a modified engine. In the stock ECU there are many little things going on in the background that you really can't adjust that it can be quite difficult to get it exactly right on a heavily modded car.

A typical big build with dual intake etc. will certainly run better on the emerald stuff than it would on stock, no issues with MAFs. A mostly stock car wil not be any smoother than running on a stock ECU but you do benefit from having proper fuelling control if using wideband so you can get a little more economy wise too.

does the emerald support telemitry output for a digital dash, eg my AIM MXL?

does the emerald support telemitry output for a digital dash, eg my AIM MXL?

It does have CAN capability and supports some AIM dashboards, not sure which but I can find out for you. MXL does sound familiar.

cool CAN output should work without issues :)

Looks like MXL is supported, Emerald manual extract:

AIM MXL configuration

Using the AIM Race Studio 2 software select ‘System manager’.

Retrieve the current configuration from the AIM dash by clicking the ‘Receive’ button. Click the ‘ECU

manufacturer’ entry for the current configuration and set to ‘AIM’. Click the ‘ECU model’ entry for the current

configuration and set to ‘PROT_CAN’.

If you wish to change how/what data from the ECU is displayed on the AIM dash click the ‘System

configuration’ tab and set accordingly. Once you are happy with your channel/display settings update the AIM

dash by clicking the ‘Transmit’ button.

Refer to your AIM manual for detailed information.

This is from the old K3 manual so would need to check with Karl for the K6 but I can't imagine he'd have removed it.

Cheers
