...Daily driver that is. I currently have a 2 litre Alfa 156, its a brilliant car, just think I need something with a turbo for a bit more 'go'.

So I'd sell the alfa for £1100-ish, I will be looking upto about £1500 for a turbocharged (petrol) motor - any suggestions or recommendations welcome! Ideally something fairly new - 1997 onwards. (new to me :blushing: )

Cars that have already crossed my mind:

Saab 9-3 / 9-5 turbo

Audi A4 / A6 1.8T

Passat 1.8T

Volvo S40 T4

any others? :helpsmilie:

Hi Baz,

the Saab(s) and the Volvo would be nice, fairly swift motors....

.....but if you're even considering the VW or Audi 1.8 turbos; forget it and go with their 2.0 turbo diesel versions instead! Much better than the 1.8 turbo petrol units. Every bit as quick (maybe quicker) and better economy/reliability/durability to boot...!!

thanks Richard, I've never owned a diesel, maybe its time I looked at them lol. I know my budget isn't great, but I'm reluctantly thinking of changing the alfa, despite it being a very well equipped and smart car. Just don't want to end up with some base model thing, but hopefully I'll find something I will be happy with.

No worries Baz!

I've run various Passats in my company fleet; when I replaced the 1.8 turbo petrol cars with the 2.0 TDi 130bhp all the drivers preferred the performance of the diesels!

Of course all our fleet cars are diesels nowadays but the old shape Passat TDi (with the 130bhp engine) is still a good buy - especially in HiLine spec with leather etc etc...

.....and if you can stretch to the Audi A4 you get a nice quality car for not much cash. Although the Passat is not very far behind!

This sort of thing would be ideal, an estate would give me much more flexibility when it comes to carrying items around - the rear seats in the alfa dont even fold down!!

But its done 157,000 miles!!! I've seen lots with that sort of mileage, is that as bad as it sounds, or is there plenty of life left in it?

speak to a taxi driver, ive had loads tell me the running and maitenece of a diesel far outweighs that of the petrol equivilant, most saying they will never get a diesel again

gor the audi 1.8T, loads of tunig potential if you wish

The benefit of the VAG 1.8T is tunability. 150 stock, but you can get it chipped just about anywhere for 200hp.

I do like black GSi's, would have to be a facelift if any though. Can I stoop as low as a vauxhall though? the links are a bit pricey for my immediate budget, I doubt vectras can handle mileage as well as the german tanks.

vectras dont last too long thats for sure

theres plenty above 200,000 km with no running issues etc.

Same with any car there are dogs about and with it being a gsi alot have been ragged about.

I was lucky with mine. almost mint and runs as good as new. just done 118000km and solid as a rock
