Just bought some Audi wheels for the girlfriends new polo, standard wheels are 4x100, new ones are 5x100.

I know PCD adapters are available (about £120) but I've noticed on the net that a couple of people have had wheels re-drilled.

Would this raise any safety concerns or is it ok? I'm guessing any machine shop would be able to carry out the conversion? If its an acceptable way round it and works out a fair amount cheaper then we'll go down that route.

thankZ :sweatdrop:

I wouldn't redrill EVER. You'll end up having at least one bolt hole close or overlapping another.

Look on the VW forums for a 5 stud conversion. Must be doable, just like with Vauxhalls.

it does depend on the wheel if they are solid in the centre area or (like most) hollow between the hole pitches. if the wheels are 5 stud you can fit a 4 stud pattern between them with equal distance from the original holes. get an engineering shop to have a look at them. also if they can be done they could add steel inserts to give a stronger seat for the bolts to sit on too.

an engineering machine shop could probably knock up the adapters cheaper then that tbh.

Don't drill - it can be done yes, but it's almost never worth it.. go for adapters, just bear in mind you'll have a trade off so think it through, narrower adapters mean less offset, less strain on the studs, but thinner adapters may also be weaker (not too sure on this however, I generally feel uncomfortable running adapters/spacers), thicker means you may need arch work to fit them. H&R do tonnes of adapters from 15mm up to god knows how thick.

Nah she likes these wheels, and wheels off the wrong car is big in the VW world apparently

Gonna get some adapters, I think by the time a machine shop have welded/filled the existing holes, redrilled, and machined down, going to looking at £100 for the set. Therefore adapters seem the obvious solution. Cheers for the input guys.
