Guys

Got the first two of my new secondhand wheels from japan http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250636478761&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT I expect the other two will be here tmoz??

Anyhows they dont look that wide but I know nothing about wheel sizes or offsets etc. Anyhows any way I can check the offsets before I go and put them up for sale if they definately will not fit?

I have not got the car back yet, do you think its worth putting them on without tyres before I go and get rid of them because they are too wide for my standard arches?.

Nice wheels, if they dont fit my zed im sure they will look absolutely stunning on someones wide arch one :whistling:

Lovely looking wheels be a REAL shame not to put them on the car. But I dont want to do arch work or go wide arch for the sake of a nice set of wheels.

They dont look that bad TBH might get lucky!

you will be able to get an idea by measuring the offset... firstly you will need to find the exact centreline of the wheel width (for example, if its a 10" wide rim you need to mark the rim 5" in from the edge)... the offset is a measurement in mm from that mark to the mounting point of the wheel. if you lay a 12" steel rule, flat on the faying surface of the wheel and mark the rim ensuring the steel rule has remained straight, you can then measure the offset fairly accurately.

Ok The rear 9.5 ones are dead centre (4.75 inches either side) where the back of the wheel would meet the hub on the car. I have checked it twice and it is definately dead centre.

0 is good isn't it, if you want your wheels to sit flush with the lip of the arch?

Incorrect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Width AND offset need to be taken into account and zero offset on a 9.5" wheel does not in any way mean it'll sit flush with the arch on a Z. 9.5" on a rear, to have it sitting flush with the arch, the ideal offset is about +35. For the fronts with that width, probably about +25.

another thing to remember is that the width of the wheel is taken from inside the lip, not form the outside edge, so if you are measining from the outside of the rim it's best to do it from both sides to find the center of the wheel....

then you can measure the offset.....

off set of "0" is only good if that (or close) is what fits your car...

Thanks for correcting me Si. So when my new wheels go on what should I be fitting? rear et35 front et32 i think?!

Forget offsets on their own. You need to know width to work out what offset is ideal. One does not work without the other.

Understood! front 18x8.5 et32 and rear 18x9.5 et35

Rears look ok, but fronts, to look flush, you'll need at least 10mm spacers. Probably go for 15mm as you can just about get away with a +18 on an 8.5" wheel provided it's not too low and you've tapped up the little edge bracket at the front of the arch where the liner screws into.

Thanks mate. Time to get on to hubcentric :)

....damn, my maths sucks. That'll give you effective +17 rather than +18 with 15mm spacers.

Think I'll wait til there on the car to order!

The fronts are offset just harder to measure exactly what they are. Guess I will have to wait and see when I get the car to get an idea.

  • 1 month later...

this offset stuff is pretty interesting

so 8.5" front to sit flush with +32 could do with 10-15mm spacers‚ so to avoid spacers on 8.5" about +45 offset or with 9" front about +40

9.5" rears need +35?

cheers
