Hi Guys, recently I have fitted a Mongoose quad tip cat back system and although it makes a nice deep rumble when pottering about, the noise it makes at idle is pants quite frankly!!!!:mad2:

It is a real deep burble, but not nice at all. Sounds very turbulant & is a pure baffle type noise.

The engine is ticking over correctly at the right revs, the car still has the original cats etc. If I raise the revs very slightly with the throttle, the noise is much nicer and you can hear the engine again as apposed to baffling.

As anyone else experienced this with this system and is there any way to cure it??

This is not a little moan, the idle note really is crap ATM even mates have commented.

Cheers....

i know what you mean mate, mine was the same (when i had one) sounds a bit "farty" when idling, i think its because the tailpipes are rolled inwards perhaps? not sure but there a nice note when revved and not too loud,

"Farty!" - Yes I suppose you could describe like that. Pants is my description!

TBH, for anyone looking for a new exhaust, I can NOT recommend a Mongoose system. The quality is below standard, poor fit and the noise at idle is not good.

Some on here will remember, I originally had the Mongoose Oval tips, but had to send them back because the ovals were different! Then the quads came and the lengths of the tips were longer on one backbox to the other!

Beware! My quess is that there was a time when the Mongoose for the 300zx was good, but ATM, quality seems very suspect.

Glad I bought mine when mongoose were still making them if that's what they're like now! sad really

It looks very nice at the rear, the tails are very stock looking, but nicely larger than stock, more in keeping with the performance of the car.

The noise at low revs and when booting it is very nice, but the idle noise is not good.

Wondering if fitting decats or divorced turbo elbows would correct this.

yes annoying isnt it! i'm on my 2nd zed now... my first had a mongoose on when i bought it (which did the same on idle) and my current zed which i bought 1 for even with the odd idle noise! mainly for the looks and the not so noisy cruising noise.

i always put it down to it being a 3 cylinder engine on idle noise... as there is no H or X pipe, the exhaust runs are seperate the whole way along so you just hear 2 3 cylinder engines, with a higher rpm it becomes less evident because of the frequency of the noise. have you noticed it sounds awesome on idle from cold when the rpm is a little higher?

it has been my intention for along time to get a H pipe fitted as i think this will sort the noise out nicely...

They used to be the mid range system to go for. As I said mine is fine but quiet untill you give it some, doesn't sound farty at all. Don't know what you could do to make it idle better except loosen the the bolts at the cat to make it blow..lol

Never have had any problems with mine in the five years it's been on Eliza, she's always sounded very nice, all be it a little on the subdued side. And for that reason she'll be having de-cats and divorced down pipes fitted soon ;)

Yep far too quiet.. on the plus side the police think it's a stock exhaust and it's loudISH when just bumbling around the street at 1k-1.5k ... but not rawcus by any means

Yes mate, it does sound much better at cold idle because of the higher revs.

Where would you get a H pipe from? I take it that would replace the centre sections currently on?

Its funny how some people have no problem though. This idle noise is poor and I'm sure 99% of people would agree.

yeh... i'd be interested to hear one that doesnt sound like it. there is a company near me who fabricate exhausts.. they would supply and fit it. centre section would be the ideal place.

I have a perfect fit mongoose and sounds good. One of the best for the zed if standard looks are important, why dont you get a kakimoto? Saying that once you have one of them you want the mongoose back. You may have a poor knock off one lol

why dont you get a kakimoto?

because the next one that comes up for sale is mine lol :2guns:
