I'm in the building industry and own a mid size civils company. Turnover about £1m. With f/a profit, so don't think for one minute i'm rolling in it!!

I drive a second hand zed ffs!!!

Oct 2008 I had to lay off 10 men (60% of my work force), and for the last year and a half have kept on an average of 7 to 8 guys, and good lads they are to. With piddly little contracts, 3 weeks here 6 weeks there. Absolute nightmare to balance, but we are still here.

Had one decent sized job last year, lasted for 8 months for ave of 4 guys, but always struggled to get back on form, and have one or two meaty jobs to keep the future looking bright. (Seemed to be these jobs always got shelved by the Client, and then hear nothing).

Then, today, from two separate contractors two differnt jobs, i get a call, "can you start in three weeks time?" Uh yeah!!

One job worth £450K the other £400K.

Now I'm f*ked

:hammer:It's always the way mate. I was an Aeronauticle liscensed contractor and I can honestly say that I either had no work or too many contracts that, sods law, I always chose the wrong job, losing out on money and finding that the contract would end earlier than expected leaving me in the poo again. It's a hard world out there at the moment.

I'm going for a pint later to clear my head!!

No point in turning a contract like that down.. unless you are absolutely at breaking point and theres no possible way. Do you get on with any other owners of local firms that you can get in on the action? as long as you make sure you make a killing from it I'm sure they'd be glad to co-operate given the current climate. ;)

Yeah, already done that, but joint ventures are a dangerous game, especially with me in charge!!

i know the feelin' mate. must be hard though trying to keep a business afloat in these uncertain up and down times.
