I could buy a couple of leather settees, that are in good condition (Burgundy in colour off of fleebay. Could get em for £50 if no-one else bids).

I got black series 1 seats, so they are plain not ribbed.

So if I got these settees, i could cut all the big bits of leather and re-trim the doors, arm rest glove box etc.

Has anyone done this, would it work. I can't see a problem with it. Tell me I'm wrong if I'm being a kn*b!!

Would Burgundy be too close too black as a contrast, bearing in mind my Zed is Midnight Purple.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. :cowboy:

hmm interesting idea! it would be straightforward to trim the cards (says the guy who gave up doing his own 10 minutes ago). the seats might be trickier - pre-fabbed seat kits come with special tubes along the inside where you can slide wires down which then attach to the seat frame to give it a nice tight look - you'd have to make these yourself if you were to use that sofa. IMO shop around for the right kit - you should be able to pick up seat and card trim kits for £370ish

I wasn't thinking of re-trimming the seats, I was going to leave them as is, as I have already had them re-furbed, although if there was enough leather left i could do the seat and back panel only. but probably not!!

Why not buy a hide from.. say the uk hide company, you can get a hide in Jaguar Beige for about £80,. dont know how much you could cover with it, i think the quality of the leather in the sofa will not be good enough, probably a bit thin.

If anyone has covered straight from a hide, let us know,

Also if there was enough leather left, what about the dash, and also the top section of the door being that it's the usual plastic at the mo??

sofa leather if real would be good for car seats, it needs to be rugged enough to last, plus a sofa is usually subjected to more abuse then a car seat would be.

Ian, if i had a choice, i know which way i would go.

Had a thought though, why doesn't Steve buy 2 chairs instead, dont break them up, just slap on a set of runners and stick 'em in the car...original..

Right, now then, we do seem to have gone off at a bit of tangent here.

Jokes aside

Is this in principle a good idea or not?

Bad idea. Furniture leather is thin and won't last. Hides are not that expensive and far easier than chopping up a tired old settee.

Si is right it would be too thin for the seats as there is a difference between furniture leather & automotive grade leather...plus on most leather sofas today the use "cut leather" which is sliced thin so they get 2 or even 3 hides out of one!!! the usually put this on the sides & backs etc! but if you want it for door cards dash & not the seats then it would be fine i guess.

Ok, Some positives and negatives.

It seems to depend on thickness of material.

Definitley won't touch the seats apart from risking the quality of the leather already, the job in itself is going to be awkward to say the least.

But door cards etc, I will give it some thought I think.

Are you guys not reading the post.

He's not interested in doing the seats. Only the panels. I personally think that the sofa leather would be a good idea. You should have loads of leather there more than you would get on a hide. Better value for money especially if you are only doing the less hard wering areas.

For door cards etc, i would have thought it will be fine. I bought a hide in black leather a while back for about £40 but getting the right colour might be an issue, although you can pretty much get them any colour now.

Have you done a search on ebay for a hide in the colour you want? you might be able to save yourself a few quid and the hassle of taking apart a sofa.

Yeah looked at hide, but to get a decent volume for what i want to do and minimal cost is difficult. 55sq ft for about £80.00!! I reckon i need more than that, cos I might leather everthing. i want to keep my options open I think.

Once i finished i can have a good burn up on the bonfire.
