Now I have international bolt on for calls to the US and Europe. All works out pretty cheap. I have a friend in Argentina who I call and it costs me quite a bit to phone her. Now O2 don't have Argentina listed in their international calling bundle. Calls to this destination are £1 per minute...seriously!

So, been looking at using an International Calling Card.

Does anyone know much about these? Seems there are all sorts of different ones. Understand you pay for a local call and the rest gets charged to the calling card?

Hi Si.

Who you with for your house phone?

My mother is with virgin and she calls her friend in california all the time and also my brother who lives in ireland, she pays alittle extra each month, but this allows her to call abroad for free tho if she goes over 60mins in the one phone call there will be charges at a huge price i believe. not sure if its 60mins call time abroad in the one day or just for the one call.

The package she has also includes the tv package also.

I've only used an international calling card in the US to call home, but I know that it didn't charge the landline anything it just took the credit off the card.

I've been down this route. I'm with BT. I have a very good calling package to North America with my mobile. Thing is, Argentina is one of this countries that just costs a fortune and doesn't come under any discount schemes.

My bolt-on allows me to call home and internally within the US on my UK phone for 10p per minute. :)

Ever thought on getting a mic and webcam for the PC and just logging onto a chat site like msn, yahoo messenger etc should be free that way.

Apart from what i said above call package wise for the house i dont know. sorry there.

me too...cost less to call wifes family in cali than my mother 5 miles away:confused:

Si I also remember before there was a service that allows you to dial an international number via a local rate access number (i.e. 0844 0845 etc). I used one before to call my ex in Austrailia. That was 5-6 years ago so the service name escapes me.

Skype is a PITA. Both people have to be online at the same time.

Crazy isn't it! For me to call the US, it costs me only 8p per minute!

yeah could just arrange when to call.lol.

My daughter calls home once or twice a week from China. Neither my wife or I need to be online ?? We are with Virgin.

She also phones her gran who is with BT with no internet or any add ons.

Think she said her last call which was around 70 minutes was nothing ?

Can check and get back to you Si ?

When we dial 1471, it comes up a local number which was designated to her by Skype. Not entirely sure how it works, but will find out for you if you want ?

Alan........

Skype is absolutely brilliant if you have an ok bb connection. Skype to Skype is free of course, but they have fabulous skype to landline/mobile offerings.

For €6.88 I have unlimited calls to landline numbers in Ireland and most European countries.

Just checked there for Argentina. Just as a standard bundle for 120 minutes it costs €1.94 or for €5.73 you can have unlimited calls during the month.

Worldwide package of €11.94 and you can call European countries landlines, some Asian destinations, some South American destinations and North American landlines and mobiles. Same for Canada.

(All figures include VAT above)

I have a good Wireless service, so got rid of the landline and am saving a lot of cash.

Skype rocks!

Bigminceys reply just reminded me to mention, that you can set skype up so that the caller ID on the recipients handset, registers as your mobile. Therefore if somebody misses your call, they will ring you back to your mobile. You can also get a geographic number from skype so that mobiles, landlines etc can ring through to your skype number.

I'm a major fan.:thumbup1:

This man has forgot more than I know !!

Have a look at Truefone as well. This calls a local number, sends the call over the internet and then out to mobile or land line locally. The person at the other end doesn't need to be on the same service or conneted to the internet to receive the call.

We are looking at this where I work but it is only for residential customers at the moment.

check out o2 home phone, its just launched and although it may not rectify your argentina issue it will certainly help out with calling the usa, basically for £12.50 line rental you can call the states for free and that includes mobiles. there are other international countries on there you can call free also so it may come in handy.

check the o2 website, its not being advertsied at present much but there is some info on there and it is available now.

Hi Si check out 18185 at http://www.18185.co.uk that might save you a lot I have started using this service after using various cards and numbers etc. The other alternative might be paying £5 to by if you have them for home phone per month where you can get free calls to USA, but that wont help you with the Argentina side of things. Also check out vonage on vplan5 USA and Argentina landlines are included for £20 per month unfortunately not mobiles.

The other thing to watch out for is that with some services if you call a uk number that re diverts providers are getting clever on this and charging you anyway so you dont save. there is one provider I cant remember the name of at the moment but I will post again when I remember and they provide you with a dedicated number for each phone number you want to call which I believe gets around that problem. Maybe 18185 they are showing 10p min to mobiles and 6p min to fixed lines right now.
