hi im new to forums and im new to the 300zx scene.

i have wanted one for years but have 4 children.

i have recently been able to afford one as i need ti have a family car as well as the new toy.

Im having a few problems tho its a 1990 twin T (auto)

when i accelerate the boost gage goes right up to 7 then drops right back down with no real kick.

the engine doesnt smoke and makes no tapping noises nor overheats

i suspect turbo or vacuum problems as other than this the car drives fine just slower than my 2.0 red top astra :(

any ideas would be apreciated ( already ordered a usb consult cable with software

ta

Welcome matey :) Once you get all the leaks sorted it should be a nad quicker than the gt ,depending on overall condition of both cars that is :)

cheers mate :)

mines an auto TT so i expect a bit less but i am tempted to get the manual conversion but i want to see the auto in full form first. my mechanic friend has had a look at it today and is ringing me in the morning so i hope i get her back in full form :D

i have marked a couple of suspect pipes from what i can see in the photo & its just a guess but the one marked top left of pic looks like a joining piece but from photo it seems to have a open end? (could be my eyes)

also check the pipes by the throttle bodies there is a little pipe under them where a vac pipe should be attached?

if u look at these points on your bigger photo on page one u can see clearer what im trying to point out!

anothe trick for finding a boost leak is with the engine running spray wd40 around every joint & gasket eg. throttle bodies/ idle control valve(back right of plenum) etc u will hear revs change if there is a leak & may see wd40 getting sucked in??

ps ditch the dice valve caps & pick up your tax disc rubish off the floor lol:tt2::sneaky2:

cheers for the advice mate ill crack on in the morning :D and the rubbish was picked up after the photo and the dice valve caps are in the bin already they are the ultimate in tack lol :P the pics where taken as soon as i got the car home lol

right i found one leak on the pipe from the intercooler back up ive fixed it by tightning it :D

i have taken for a quick spin and boost seems to be holding fine. mine states it in mmhg

-7 to +7 and it was holding at 3.5 to 4.5 mmhg is that about right for stock.

it doesnt appear to have any bov's but i can still hear a duming noise when i take my foot off the pedal i cant hear owt when foots down as the exhaust system rock s :D its still no where near as quick as my mates stock 3000gt twin turbo and i mean not even close so when i find all the leaks hopefully the power will be restored :D ill post later if power is still down

Yeah you have more leaks by the sound of it. you should be on 7 or very close to. Your not far running off satey boost.

obviously depending on condition you would just about have the edge on the GTO:thumbup1:

thanks to yts he found 1 leak :D which again is now fixed still not running right but there is a blowing noise when i accelerate when i drive under the wheel arch of the passenger side so thinking its the turbo feed or the turbo. definatly going to the mechanics today :D ill have him ramp it :D

Its an engine out job to fit new turbos so you should never ever fit a pair of used ones.

If you have blowing in or around the wheel arch then a pipe may of come off your AIV valves.this all to do with vacumes etc, do a search and you will find loads of threads

whast the best way to get to AIV Valves?? Wheel off and underneath or bumer off or can they be got at from underneath with out removing anything as my mate has done 100's of rebuilds he is good but he has never worked on a Z if i can direct him to a probable cause it will make his work easier :D

thanks again mate :D

bypass them mate u dont really need them ...there is a great web page with all little jobs like this posted on them for the life of me i cant remember it ...im sure someone will know what im on about & post the link!! it has aiv delete/ egr delet etc etc all photographed & well written so easy to follow!..

ps glad i helped find one leak lol:tooth:

just had another look at your large phot on page 1 & also looks like a split vacuume pipe to the brake servo just above the servo where it says (4WAS) there is a joint & the pipe on the right of it looks split??? ...all these little leaks could be adding up to a large boost leak if u get me? & either way they should be sorted as i found out on mine ...it just a process of ellimination

wow that AIV Removal looks a pain in the arse lol ill have a go on saturday.

found another leak a big one coming off the intercooler at the passenger side FIXED :). the car now boosts fine but is still a little under powered. ( goes sideways now tho :D )

now there are no leaks its making a very bad blowing sound directly in the middle of the wheel arch (passenger side) only when boosting( sounds similar to that of a dump valve but permantly blowing). could the AIV cause this and again

as for the split pipe near the 4was its a plastic clip after the metal one thats reflected light the servo pipe appears fine but does look a it naff in the pic thats if i got the right pipes i never been good with engines

thanks for the help mate u been a star :D

thanks

ordereed the right one cheers for noticing that

its a bit narrower than the original one could that make a performance issue or not???

cheers

Once you've sorted the majority of boost leaks I would personally reset your ECU to get it learn the seetings again. If the boost leaks have been there for a while the ecu wouldhave adjusted other settings to accomodate.

Disconnect the battery then pump the clutch and brake pedals a few times each to get the excedd power out of the system. Then reconnect back up after an hour. the car will run a bit poor for 30 - 40 miles but then you should notice a nice increase in performance unless of course you still have other issues. Or you could wait for the consult software and reset it manuall using a laptop.

u dont need to do the whole lot just the solonoids to disconect & vac pipes in the aiv system capped off no need to take the wings off unless u wanna save weight etc !

hmm noticed it was from behind the wheel arch at the front so took the bumper off and i got a big problem with the intercooler

the mounting has snapped leaving a nice big hole straight into the intercooler i have taken it out lol.

now looking for a passenger side intercooler :(

ill throw a pic on later lol

  • Author

lol i have alreay messaged him asking if its right side cause he has it on twice with the same picture :D and yes i imagine that will put a serious dent in the cars performance i just hope that it aint buggered the turbo as i dont know how many miles the previous owner has drove it like that. i have only done 85 miles/km but he could of done 1k for all i know he did sell it cheap :(

when its all done i have been quoted £250 for a power run a remap then second run. already asked the wifey for an early 30th prezzie :D
