Hi Guys,

Got a problem and need some advice, just recently i've been hearing a "tapping" rhythmic sound, when i say recently, i mean i wasn't there yesterday but today it is..

Could it be tappets? thought at first it was a squeaky belt,

Its bugging me and i keep getting the idea the turbo's have had it..

Any advice more than welcome

Rich

Does it do it when it's hot or cold....or all the time?

Why would you suspect it being turbos if it's tapping?

  • Author

Seems to be louder when hot,can just hear it at cold,

Why do i think its the turbos's ? simple, I'm paranoid!

Rich

You are!

If it's top end tap and gets louder when warm, it could be the VVT springs.

some more info.

started the car from cold this morning, could have sweared i heard a tat-tat-tat and then nothing, listened to the engine but i was running just like a V6 should, drove to work and established this noise comes on at 2000rpm, whatever gear, From the inside i'm sure it sounds like a belt squeeling...

Parked up at work , engine running, took my foot off the clutch, and there it was rat -tat or squelling , just touch the cluth down a smidge and noise goes away, lift off...well i'm sure you get the picture..

Hope this helps in diagnostics

Cheers

cheers simon, whats the deal with the noise stopping when i dip the clutch at idle, is it connected to load on the engine?

Are the VVT springs easy to replace or is it a garage job.

thanks Simon

Think it has something to do with the neutral switch. When the car is out of gear, the engine's timing is changed. This is partly controled by the pressure on the springs in the little control unit. So you'll find it's quieter on idle.

Run a test. Disconnect the VTC solenoid plugs, rev it a few times and see if it goes. That rev range is when the variable timing control works and can make a rattle if the springs are faulty.

The VTC solenoid plugs are located at the nearside rear of the plenum, grey 2 pin oval plug and the offside front of the plenum close to the power steering resovoir (same plug).

I get a tappy engine when cold but once warmed up its fine after a good run.............oil change possibly?

Some more info, Came home from work, engine was warm, so when it idles there is this squeeling/tapping sound (still cant tell what it is) Did the long screwdriver trick, but couldn't determine where noise was coming from, Now get this.. i kneel down next to the drivers side front wheel, and i hear this noise 10 times better , dont know if it helps but you never know.

Forgot to add, it sounds more like a belt squeeling when i hear it from the front wheel, not sure how the vvt springs work so cant say what noise they make

On my BM i had a similar issue, it was blatently a hydraulic tappet noise but we couldnt tell why. It sounded worse near the underside (similar because the engine is pointing towards the back) anyway, a strip down and rebuild later i found a hell of alot of gunk and silicone in the oil pickup tube in the sump. It wasnt getting the pressure to the top of the engine. Im not sure how relevant to this engine it is but i hope that helps a bit.

Hi Guys, well i have some more info on this and would appreciate some advice, Went to see Vodkashots and he had a listen. he narrowed it down as coming from the gearbox. When you get down and listen it defiantly is. this would explain why i could hear it when kneeling down at the wheels, if i'd gone lower and back i would have heard it louder,

Now this noise is more (rattling/pinging) is apparent on tickover in neutral, goes away when i slightly depress the clutch and is heard all through the gears progressively. The pinging noise gets higher in frequncy as the revs get higher, stopping when i assume it goes beyond our hearing range (might explain all those dogs running after me down the A14)

So, is it the clutch? i have had no slipping in gear like you normally get, might it be the starter motor, we have no idea, there is 1 thing, just today, when i start the car, before it gets into full swing into idle, a sound is emitted that is really rough and load, just for half a second..

So, any help with my problem will be appreciated

Rich

to add more light to this, when rev started the engine, it sounded very clunky for a brief moment, like metal striking metal, then once the engine was idling, a very loud tapping in time with the rotation of the crank that only stopped once the clutch pedal was pressed.

my possible causes were, clutch, thrust bearing, or starter motor on the way out.

the tapping gets faster with rev increase and is definitely coming from the bell housing area,

You could take the starter motor out and having a look round see if anything is breaking up.

thats what i wanted to do, but time and coldness prevented it.

Looks Like i've found the culprit, here is a picture from underneath looking at the starter motor, the clamping/positioning bolt has come out, i stuck a bar in there and started it up and there was no horrendous noise or sound when revved or idle. my question is what size bolt usually goes in there? or was it a stud?

Cheers

mine will tap quietly when cold but soon as its warm is sweet as a nut, ive since decided that its normal. and im paranoid about everything with my zed. or should i be paranoid? lol see paranoid!
