Hi

As you know, have been rebuilding/chroming/polishing everything in the engine bay recently, and now want to balance out the bling with some colour (RED of course) and some carbon fibre. (BTW thanks to Andy/Ant et al for sharing there inspiring builds).

I have fabricated my own engine skins (amongst other things :punk:) and they are now 98% final fit; rather than paint these the body colour - I am thinking I may re-make (using the current as a mould) in cf or kevlar. Now as my car will either be RED or BLACK when it's completed, I am more inclined to go for cf as that will go with either nicely so...

HELP & ADVICE BIT:

Here are a couple of shots of the skins (engine still topless)

Should I remake in CF, or maybe add CF inserts or detailing?

Also: I have created what I call 'Plenum Caps' in three different styles, and in both kevlar and cf, and here you can see the ones I call 'BATCAPS' in cf.

These just need final wet sand and clearcoat.

Try and imagine the carbon engine skins, with the red features of the polished plenum/throttle bodies, the cf high level fuel rail brackets and the cf plenum caps and probably cf air guide/headlamp slam panel and custom cf cam belt cover.

Here is the plenum/throttle bodies:

Here is the custom fuel rail:

What do you think? Cool wall:clap: - or total tosh:asshole: idea?

'BATCAPS' are to hide some of the crap/wires/pipes as I no longer have room for the OEM throttle cover. Also a good place to place some LED lighting ;-)

They are pure cf, 3 layers using high temp epoxy and weigh only a few grams each.

I am sticking my neck out a bit here as I am sure that if they solicit favourable comment they will appear at a ZEDCENTRAL Fabricator in the Midlands real soon now!!

Andy, looks like you have been busy again!

Personally im not sure if death by carbon will give you a great look??? being 100% honest it looks terrible on the Plenham.

If you wanted to do something real unique go for polished aluminium riveted together old school style like on the 30s planes?? on the skins.

err yeah thanks - April 1st was a couple of weeks ago - but good try. ;-)

Trying to avoid death by carbon - hence the question of balance.

LOL Id go for the car colour once you decided on that, maybe someone could paint shop it up for you in a carbon/kevlar finnish as well?

Just polish or chrome the plenham imo? are you cutting bits of your bonnet out to fit some of these bits?

No bonnet as such - it's a one piece [wide] front clip on actuators ;-) Nothing is standard anymore lol

Plenum is already half polished, I just get these creative 'periods' that I need to suppress obviously ;-)

Appreciate the comments from everyone so far - thanks very much for your honesty and time.

Must get back on track and stop distracting myself. lol ;-)

Please don't tell me you're putting gauges in the engine bay!?!

Good work on the fabrication though. Pretty good going despite all the red bits.

Well thanks Si - :devil2: (I think) :turned:

That engine bay gets very hot how will the skins cope with the heat and will the skins make the engine bay hotter?

Carbon fibre + High temp Epoxy - it wont melt and I cant imagine its going to contribute to the heat. I have a vented bonnet anyway so not as bad as stock.

But the current concensus is it sucks - so it will be going back to that big box of prototype dross in the corner oif my studio :hang:

Hi Andy,

some good work there, though questionable taste! I have an idea that you might be able to help me on, what's the best way to get in touch?

DOH! There see - that's the rub - I have fantastic taste!!

But you all have been great, and a different POV is what I was looking for.

I had been inspired by some beautiful engine covers that I seen at a US/Corvette show down South at Easter, and I came away thinking I could do better on my Zed but...

...Anyway - I'm better now and promise to snap out of it and focus on the finish line and not the cleavage of the gal holding the flag!:helpsmilie:

You can mail me Jaffa at andy.gp@gmx.com

(small print) I'm not a fabricator, I'm not interested in making anything for anybody else, and you can't afford the time even if I did. But always happy to chat/help a fellow zedder
