- We know exactly where every untaxed car is located among the millions of car owners in the UK, but we haven't got a clue where thousands of illegal immigrants and terrorists are located.

So why doesn't Gordon brown put the Fking DVLA in charge of immigration..:gunsmilie:

Cause they make no money out of finding illegal aliens as they can't make money out of them!

This country is bust, VAT will be 25% at the next budget and basic rate of tax will be about 30%

I notice it all the time. When I was in California just over a year ago, prices had rocketed. California has quite high fuel prices anyway and I think they'd risen to over $4 a gallon. Now they are down to about $2.50 a gallon. I was quite surprised how much the prices had dropped when I was in Georgia in September. Factor in the exchange rate variance and you don't really get a true reflection. When Fuel prices were over four bucks a gallon, the exchange rate was 2:1. So effectively, they were paying about 50p a litre based on that exchange rate...which would be about 75p a litre on today's exchange rate based on 2008 prices.

ย

I'm back in California in a few months, so will be interesting to see what the prices are then. I did happen to fill up at one of the most expensive gas stations in the whole of the US in La Jolla (California) and this was $4.20 from memory. That works out at around 55p per litre as there are 3.8 litres to a US gallon.

ย

Based on prices for fuel in September which I saw in Atlanta (GA), and the current exchange rate, they are paying about 43p a litre. Now if the exhange rate hadn't changed, that value would be about 1/4 what it is here, but it isn't.

ย

Wouldn't it be nice if the UK government dropped the tax a little. The reason we don't see the differences constantly go up is that the UK tax system on fuel duty (not VAT) is also a buffer and is not fixed. When wholesale fuel prices go up, we don't see the huge jump that the US does. The US tax on fuel is pretty marginal and doesn't absorb like UK taxation. So this is why the US sees quite volatile fluctuations at the pumps....if that makes any sense.

Yes that was what gave me the shock lol, but they said 33p as a current conversion?, i can only just remember paying 69.>(something) when i started driving and always said it will never go over 1.00 !!. We must have THE highest fuel duty in the world ?

Maybe they found the cheapest gas station in the US. Average pricing is about $2.50 per gallon. 3.8 litres in a gallon that's 65c per litre.

ย

Current exchange rate is 1 USD = 0.669274 GBP this gives you an average of 43p per litre.

ย

Based on 33p per litre, that equates to about 50c per litre. Multiply that by 3.8 and you have $1.90 per gallon. I am sure around the gulf coast states, prices can be found as low as that. Let me do a quick hunt for cheapest prices in the US.

Ok, so I just checked on gassbuddy.com

ย

California (notoriously the most expensive state) has prices from as low as $2.70 a gallon rising to $3.50

ย

Looking at some of the Gulf coast states, I picked Alabama, one of the less affluent of the coastal states. BIG refineries in Mobile, so prices should be their cheapest in the US here. These range from $2.50 to $2.80 per gallon.

ย

So not sure where they are getting their (50c) 33p a litre ($1.90 a gallon) from.

Mmmmhhh i only caught a bit of it i try to avoid the budget if i'm honest but it's always on :/ this prog also mentioned there ethanol content over ours?, anyway nice one for checking mate :) it is still shocking how much we pay compared to them !!

ย

I wonder what the dutch pay ? :w00t:

Yeah, they use bio-ethanol additive in their fuels. Something we don't really have over here.

ย

Well the Dutch's duty is similar, slightly higher, but their VAT is 19%!!

I heard talk of them increasing the amount of bio-fuels they use in our fuel?, as you say it is very low at the moment but i'm sure they said this will change as they have to fall in line with new regulations as all engines can cope with a certain mixture?.

This was on another programme i seemed to catch only slightly though :(
