Today I started building a real nice double din centre console for my new kenwood bluetooth phone satnav jobby as well as my EDFN switch. Because of the shape of the two inserts its actually quite tricky to get a perfectly flush fit, so I completely removed both sockets and have fiberglassed all the gaps and am in the process of countersinking and filling the front so it has a dead smooth look with a countersunk stereo trim so it will look mint.

I will post some pictures when it is done and im thinking of making 4 gauge pods to go on the top over the vents as well.

I have just spoken to a local plastics company that produces parts for car manufacturers. I have an appointment to meet them next week to discuss the possibilites of manufacturing a double din facia and 99 spec light inserts. Because the run would be limited the costs might be prohibative but thought it is worth a try?. I will try and get another facia to use as a template with a normal clock hole in it, if anyone has one they want to donate they will either get it back converted to double din by me, or get one of the new ones that are made up if it is financially viable. I do need to make up as good a one as possible to do the design from.

You can already buy the 99 spec light inserts from Dave (Car mad) and the quality is stunning. Ill post better pics of mine if you like chap.

Cool ok, just have a go at the double din then. How much are they? I should state that if we could get these made they should be on a non profit basis for everyone here. It might come to nothing but worth a try!

I`ve got a spare radio facier Martin :thumbup1:

do you have a spare center cubby hold??

I think at $600 for 99 style inserts and £300+ for a double din centre console why dont we find someone who can produce them. Even on a low run I cant see them costing anywhere near that much to make!!!

To produce them, you'd need to make a tool for them. The centre consols are injection moulded. Now, you could make them out of fibreglass, but I think that the vents (strip at the top) and clip areas would be far too difficult to make out of GRP.

To manufacture a tool for injection moulding purposes, would cost you about the same as the budget for your engine!

all your double din conversions make the screen point at the targas! im on the mk2 version of mine and the screen is now angled to perfection :cool2:

very good point. This is how I angled mine..same as the stock oem headunit angle.....not the same angle as the fascia. So it points at your head, not the roof.

It was much more difficult to do, but well worth it for visibility.

Angle on mine is fine, its touch screen same as my mrs one on her ST3 so nice and easy. But this is the thing if you make your own it is satisfying to have it how you want it. When I spoke to the plastics company they said their are different ways they could do them for low runs that have higher production costs and low tool costs. Just wait and see till they have had a good look at it I guess.

Tooling will be in the 10s of thousands if you're going to have it injection moulded. Compression moulding would be cheaper, but still costly.

Si you might well be right.. just have to wait and see but its worth asking the question. Nothing to loose .

Like I say its not a money making thing just curious to see what the situation is.

Oh of course. Be nice to know. I'd say there would be a huge market, but the main market would be the US....and the US has a slightly different centre consol. I'm constantly getting asked about mine on 3ZC and youtube.

Holy cows I will be going for something like JL etc thats nearly enough for a set of rims

Post a pic of your home made one! did you paint it matt black?

Rims, like my Blitz Rims for sale ;) lol.

Now looking through your pics on your site, nice work.

Wish i was a bit more handy with the fibreglass. :(

I would love to make some parts of my own.
