Just wondered who is still using there Zed in the snow?

im to sceptical to even try as my other older RWD cars have always been a handful in it, and im getting wheel spin in 3th from a standstill in my other FWD car. Id dread to think what it would be like in a zed

so that brings me to my next question. Apart from good quality tyres are there any handling mods that can give the zed superior grip in rain/snow etc? I been using playing with a little 1 series BM for a while and the handling and grip for such a basic car seems to be far better than my zed.

It`s so much fun! Trust me! I love it. Everyday I am going to tesco`s car park for couple of spins!!!:tank:

Mine is my daily drive so it has had to get me to the station and back each day. Its been OK once I got it moving, but quickly learnt not to park facing uphill!

i drove up to yorkshire on sun hit M1 at sheffield and it was white just 4 tracks and all i can say it was fun ,and also went to Z centre today to get some Xmas pressys and every gear the car was skidding due to ice on roads how i wish i brought my van i don`t mind if i trash that ...

I took mine out other day, such fun, i have driven in snow/ice before so im kinda use to it, just hope i dont hit blackice!

fun? hmm maybe i should stop worrying. seems like im missing a trick here,

i tend to find my zed controllable in the wet but the back end lets go far too easy. and in the ice I just dont want the front end darting up towards a kerb

and thats why i drive at about 20kph , not worth the risk , i know its a car but its my only transport and if i want a good looking bit of transport i anit risking it , hench why i couldnt make the xmas bash

TBH, as long as your very careful you shouldn't have too many problems....I was surprised at how reasonably tractable my Zed was the other day in the snow. Goes without saying, start messing with the go pedal and you will slide about.

The front end was pretty planted too, the car only misbehaving when I was really.

rear wheel drives like the zed are usless in the snow, no weight in the back and the suspension is also too stiff so no weight transfer either, its crap. try going up a hill in the snow, no chance... however the smart car i drive was actually pretty good infact i was amazed.... i got up a really really steep hill in the ice i was shocked.....mainly due to the engine being in the rear and its rear wheel drive...... also light as fook...... it also has very good traction control which doesnt just stop the power but uses it gradually, its great, honeslty try one out in the snow i was amazed.......

Now the shogun was another story all together... nothing beats it.....

i dont mind driving in snow...its just all the other idiots coming the other way...

I'm driving from Weston to Preston today That should be fun !

As Jimmy said and any rear drive with wide tyres and lots of power aint going to go far...

And as said run the risk of someone hitting you, if you wana have fun best early hours when nothing on the road.

well said.

Going to work this morning at 7 didn,t have a problem , TBH i,ve always found the zed to be quite good in the snow as long as you take it steady , never got stuck yet in 5 years of driving it :tt2::tt2::yes:

I tried to get mine to the garage yesterday, took a long while to get up the slope from my house + i kinda got bored with watching front wheel drive boring cars whizzing past.

Least bit of throttle its spinning and heading sideways.

That said, i am missing it + will be glad to be driving it again when the ice clears.

another thing i find interesting is that altho big 4x4 have wide tires and weight excess of 2 tons cars like the X5 and range rover vogue seem to be very good in the snow, apart from the 4 wheel drive there must be some other things involved in getting a car to grip better

been driving my sons 200sx around in the snow and its been fine. not got stuck once, quite suprising really as its rear wheel drive, has cheapo tyres and a welded diff. also lots of fun at industrial estates :D ;)

Took my cousin to west ham well someone has to go. and my car was all over the place . just missed two car as the Z tryed to go side ways down a street haha. Then lost it going around a corner and all i could think of was no im going to hit the pavement there go's my alloy's but stoped with 1/2 inch to go so now try to walk every were

X5.. you tried that thing in the snow yourself ?

torque transferring 4wd system...constantly altering power transfer to the wheels with the most grip....and the weight is also an advantage in such slippery conditions.

k i must say with low profile tyres i.e 20" + wheels its not 'that' impressive but with the big soft high profile tyres its quite alright altho it cant really be compared to the Range rover vouge traction tho

@ Legrath. As far as the torque transfer sytems goes. Those skyline boys must be loving it. Might be a silly thought but i wonder if the 4WD system out of the GTR can be fabricated or retro fitted to the Zed since some of the R32 running gear i.e suspension can fitted to a zed.

Good rubber, throttle modulation and a suspension setup that has compliance is the key to driving on Snow and Ice.

Torque transfer systems and 4wd are all well and good and OF COURSE they work but there are plenty of powerful RWD rally cars that do just fine in the rain, snow and ice.

I can't stress how understanding how your tyres react to snow and ice is important. You need to know when they will break away and what you can do to correct it. Suspension that has been slammed in the weeds looks great in Summer but doesn't give you anywhere to go when you break traction and makes the transition from grip to slip really severe. Also, listen to what your car is doing, listen for wheel slip - you will hear it from the revs rising before you feel it. You would be surprised how much easier a car is to drive in the snow with the stereo turned off than on!!! You hear the car moving around underneath you and you can hear when the tyres are biting and when they aren't. ALso, know when your turbos cut in and modulate your throttle accordingly - watch your boost pressures and stop the turbos cutting in if your feel you will get too much spin - drive a gear higher than you normally would etc.

I use my car every single day and have always run big RWD V8's with 400+Hp. I know it can be scary if you aren't used to it and I would never encourage anyone to drive beyond the limits of what they are comfortable with, but I would say that there is no reason to be scared of a well set-up car with a modicum of skidpan driving experience.

Your observation has to be 10 times better than it is on a dry day and it will be far less forgiving if you get it wrong but I really enjoy driving when the weather is crap out there because it allows you to move the car around a lot more.

I know my opinion might be in the minority on here but this is what daily drive powerful cars are all about - drive ultra carefully and drive within your limits (however low that might be!!) but please guys - lets drive!!

Whats really quite spooky in an auto is going slow on snow and ice and touching the brakes, locking up the fronts and still enough power and traction in D even on tickover to keep the car heading on even though you are on the brakes enough to lock the fronts. Took me seconds to realise what was going on aand knock the gear into neutral before I almost hit some bollards. I guess ABS does not work at really low speeds.
