Took my car down to my usual MOT station, to see if we can get it on his ramps.

Been advised that it might fail due to being too low?? its not hitting the stops or anything, but he said its a concern.

Never heard of a car failing due to being too low on lowing springs before

sounds like bull to me, take it elsewhere chap

i was thinking that, but his retest is free. and still need this spot of welding doing. shame i cant weld, (well its not that i cant, just that I've never tried lol)

thats BS. There are are other production cars that sit even lower. (i.e lambo etc) Id like to see what excuse they will use for that.

As long as you aint hitting the bump stops or fouling the arches with enough clearance they cant fail it on that.

sounds rubbish to me :thumbdown:maybe his ramps are not set up for low cars, not a mot failure imo but others hear will be able to give you the facts

defo not hitting the arches, got enough room under them for some 20's lol (i wished) and defo not hitting the bump stops even when hitting a speed hump at 20mph due to the old brake pads, or lack of

if the car is too low to get a jack under it then its a failure although 99% of mot testers see past this as long as it goes on there ramp ok.i`d take your custom somewhere else mate most mot places offer free retest within 10 days

oh dear!!!!!

chap i take mine and johns z to for mot cant get them on the ramp so he gets some wood and gets them up that way, never said anything about failing.

dan.

None of my cars have ever got on the ramps. I even bottom out where they test the brakes :lol:

Hi,

They cant actually fail it but if not able to get it on the ramp as it is too low then they can refuse to test it!

What Paul says.

If they think they cant get it on the equipment to test it properly or that there is a danger of damage being done then they should refuse to test it.

what type of jack? there are plenty of different jacks that can go underneath it, you can even get low profile jacks made specifically for lowered cars. some OEM car jacks can also go under it, infact the bog standard alloy jack that originally came with the car goes under it.

The only jack i have a problem with is my trolley jack.

I suppose the last person to get her MOT'ed (back in 06) didnt have such a problem due to having 18inch wheels on it, so would of raised it a bit more than what its sitting at, at the moment: as i have the standard alloys on.

They can get it on the ramps to test it, but used wood to do so, so id hazard a guess and say they have tested lowered cars before. that was the whole point in my visit today, to see if it would go on their ramps. which it did, just with the aid of wood

It isnt only the ramps they have to worry about, Some roller brake testers are quite deep, damage can be caused to spoilers etc when the car is driven over them.

Like Paul has stated they cant fail the car just because it is low. They can fail it for things like tyres rubbing or components fouling because of the modifications though.

Well last thing i need to be doing is changing springs just for the MOT.

Jesus, so what do these people do if they ever get a serious super car in then? as someone mentioned, if someone took a lambo to them?

Suppose i best hunt around for someone with a flat loading ramp

Yep that is probably your best bet, look for an MOT station with a recessed hoist ( hole cut in the floor so that the ramp platform is level with the floor surface)

Even better if you can find one that also has a plate brake tester, then they wont have an excuse not to test:)

with the amount of lowered cars around here, i suppose i could always just ask a boy racer where he gets his done? lol

Iv got one of those!! :D

If you cant get the car on the ramp, or get the jack under the vehicle when it is on the ramp then you cannot inspect properly!

It may sound harsh but that is the reality!

If cars are *extremely* low then these issues may arise - I guess a by-product of modding!

tbh most places should manage. I suspect the garage you took it to either didnt want to test it or that they have older equipment that tends to have deeper rollers etc.

Could even have been a class IV/VII bay ie: set up for doing cars and heavier vans.

Agreed - my ramp is quite steep & my car has been lowered (only with eibachs so not super low!) but still gets up with only a little scrape!

Iv got one of those!

Seemed to be the in thing a few years back, but not many new MOT stations are fitting them now, even seen some existing stations taking them out and going back to RBT's.

Plate brake testers are ideal for performance and lowered cars, fooked if I can work out how they manage to calculate all the measurements though.

LOL! its great - you stick the vehicle weight in & the efficencies come out! Job done.

They are a pain in the wet - the car just skids over the plates! Doh!

haha bullsh1te, yea it wont go up the ramps to see underneath so u gota try to get it up or they shouldnt charge u. Bring some wooden planks to help.......

wonder if Jeff is able to cater for lowered cars for the MOT?

I don't think Jeff does MOTs - I believe he takes the cars to a local tester......

Richard:thumbup1:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
