EGR Bracket Removal Makes Knock Sensor Access Possible...

... As per the title...

Did this today with my old lower plenum as a test..

If your EGR has been deleted - why keep the bracket as it the bracket that prevents you getting access to the Knock Sensor!

I forgot to take a 'befor' picture but this is the lower plenum mocked up with the bracket positioned approx before it is removed.

Its upside down in that pick which also does not help - but here is the pic with the bracket deleted.

And now the right way up...

And back on the engine...

Hope that helps - what do you guys think? Worthwhile or not?

I can get my fat hand in there with a spanner now - yippee - no more Knock Sensor Stress!

;-))

(Still have to remove stuff - just not the engine!

Thanks for that Andy! Have you a picture of the knock sensor and the location, as i have never seen one, dont know where it is, and are they worth stripping from a goosed engine to sell?

If it's a known good sensor yes matey - it's hiding in the very heart of the engine - in the cleavage of the V under the lower plenum. They are over a £100.00 new and the sub-loom that attaches them is also about £30.00 or £40.00 now. Code 34 means Knock Sensor error - sends the car into safety boost. Normally it is the wiring that is to blame but...

You either have to remove the upper and lower plenum - or if the engine is out - then remove the EGR and water pipes - to get a spanner on it.

Looks like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=280279764738

Hope that helps.

In my third picture above - that's looking from the rear of the engine into/behind where the EGR unit is normally - so that should allow you to figure out where it is.

Is the engine out of the car Daz?

Hi Andy, Thanks for all that ;) The engine is still in at the moment, but the car is a scrapper that Isaac and i have bought, we will be stripping it down and removing the engine soon, so i was just wandering if there was anything good to sell after the engine was out, or just to keep bits for spares.

Is the engine good - or blown?

I need a right hand (Battery side) valve cover ;-))

Hi Bud, We think the crank has gone, but we will have a gander to see if the valve cover is there ;) Thanks for the picture, I`m a lot clearer where it is now.

BTW - I think this should be awarded the MOD of the year - but I am slightly bias I guess ;-))

And I spose it does require upper and lower plenum removal - BUT - I do think it should go on the list of things to do when you remove your plenum for sure.

Comments appreciated as ever.

Andy

so with the engine in you take the upper and lower plenums off ect to modify the lower plenum so as to make it easier to renew the knock sensor if it goes in the future, how tight is it once the lower plenum is on and how far in is it?

You still need to remove water pipes and things - plus the hands/arms of a small svelte childlike female Japanese gynaecologist ... (or Bruce Lee's sister ;-)))

I am not suggesting dismantling your engine to perform this - mod - just do it whilst your plenum is off for other things. The Knock Sensor is an important bit of kit, the bypass makes me nervous and having to dismantle my engine at any point to replace a single sensor makes me angry so...

You can probably see in the pic how far in it is Dan.

Andy I cant PM you as you are not upgraded but can you please tell me where you got your knock sensor wiring from, also have you replaced all your 8-10-12 MM bolts if so where did you buy them from?

I purchased my Knock Sensor sub-loom from courtesy in the USA - it was only about 20USD - and the price over here (UK) seems to have gone silly at around 35-40UKP!! I had it shipped over with a load of engine parts so...

When you say 8-10-12mm bolts - I assume you mean general M6, M8 and M10 (and even some M12) bolts I used for my engine dressing - I basically purchased A2 grade Stainless Steel Allen bolts in various flavours from ebay as and when I needed them - then polished the heads myself. I did that because there are so many various lengths required - so buying 10 at a time with free postage was a no brainer for me. May not be for you if you have easy access to a supplier though. ;-)) If you want to know which ebay trader I used - let me know. (andy.gp@gmx.com)

Here are a couple more shots of the EGR bracket removed with lower plenum on - and off. This is on a spare dev/play engine so...

I thought I would cover this off before I got asked...

I have tested this myself - yes - with the engine reassembled/lower plenum fitted it is possible to completely remove the knock sensor retaining bolt - and therefore remove/change the knock sensor without removing the plenum/lower plenum (or the engine) ever again. Fiddly, but possible.

So I am awarding myself FIVE dancing bananas for this MOD.

:duffer:

I looked into this as well a few years ago, but you still won't be able to remove the sensor with the engine installed in the car.

You need to remove the gearbox to be able to access it this way (from below)

Which is still less work then having to remove the plenum/timingbelt/lower intake/etc though ! :)

  • Author

Well I did more than look into it - I did it/have done it - and I can assure you I will be able to replace my knock sensor without dropping the gearbox or removing the lower plenum. OK water pipes etc yes - but thats all. Check the pictures - the mod works.

This mod would be great if it was called for.The knock sensor or loom is hardly a consumable item and if youve removed the lower inlet, cut the egr bracket off then replaced the sensor and wiring whats the chances of it needing doing again unless you didnt do it right in the first place?

Just to confirm the engine is installed in the car and you have replaced the det sensor with the engine and gearbox installed?
