Come on it's an 17 year old bit of kit that is a pig to remove (engine out) - it's gotta make good sense to move it whilst I am that deep into the engine?

Yeah, but if you move it and the engine frequencies are different in the new location to the original (they will be) then it won't work... so you may as well bypass it!

Think it's best to just replace it with a new OEM one - seems too important to mess with. And whilst I have the lower plenum off... Not cheap - but 'No brainer'.

It makes no sense at all. Just buy a new one AND a new harness. Fit and forget for the next 17 years.

if the knock sensor found a fault or a lould enough knock in the engine would it put the car in safety mode?

 

Yes indeed it would

Replace it in the stock position, if it breaks then move it but still not desirable!
