Hi Guys

Ongoing air con prob, well the compressor died, so i need to replace it, now i'm sure i cant just disconnect the pipes and remove it ..or can i?

Now the old R12 gas/fluid was replaced with current good stuff so can i just let it drain away

Yes you can, but wear ear defenders and goggles...seriously. 1 bar can knock your eyeball out it's socket. Many will say they've been ok when they've done it...but please...don't take the risk...it's not worth it.

there is a valve by the battery, like you find on tires.

press that to release all the pressure,

then you can remove disconect the pipes/copmpressor etc

How do you know it died? It will lock out if the pressure is too low. Also are you sure the good stuff put in was the right stuff with the right lubricant else it could be what killed it.

You should get your aircon guy to vacuum it out again really, if there is much left under good pressure.

hi mate

Well i've been having probs with my a/c, had it regassed with R24, (was R12) but no improvement, have been checking compressor's clutching and on a run decided to put it on full to see if it would sort itself out. awful noises, engine dying and smoke from the compressor is good enough for me, its died...

Dont know how much there would be left under pressure, maybe none, maybe all, but once i change the compressor it'll need refilling.

Do you know if its possible to clamp off the compressor so it can be removed and the new one put on, assuming of course the pipework is flexible not hard

No not possible, pipes designed to take such high pressure ( 20 +bar ) will not clamp.

And its illegal and generally a shit idea. Get it done properly. It can also give you real nasty cold burns

Seen it done by a mobile engineer first and it worked.Tried it on the old mans land rover and it worked a treat.

Trouble is with doing it that way is that you will get air in the system. Air holds moisture, moisture+refrigerant=acid. the acid will eventually eat into the o rings in the system. That's why a decent A/C job would mean recovering the gas doing the repair, vaccum (to remove moisture) and re-charging. It's like anything do it properly or expect it to go wrong now or in the future.

Either re-cycle it or dispose of it. Probably if its 24 he'll dispose of it
