Hi all, have been having a few problems with the ol' z lately. If I take my hand off the steering wheel the car will pull to the left. I took it for tracking when I first got the problem but that hasnt really solved it. On its previous mot, there was an advisary on the front left boot but would that cause the car to pull.

 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Have the rear tracking checked, often overlooked as the focus is on the front.

Tyres pressures, geometry or sticky brake caliper.

I have checked all the tyre pressures and they are all the same. Not long ago had it tracked at demon tweeks using the laser alignment one which is usually alot more accurate.

See if the wheel gets hotter on the side its pulling to, which would indicate a sticker caliper or collapsed flexi pipe.

If you dont have directional tyres fitted you can try swapping front wheels over.

 

Sometimes you can have a tyre that has worn even slightly uneven and causes a camber effect that pulls the steering. But otherwise as already mentioned, dragging brake due to siezed caliper piston or wear or bad setting in rear steering.

Just because the tracking has recently done, it doesn't mean that it was done correctly. Not everyone is capable of getting it right on a ZX!!

 

Is the steering wheel straight? Cars with HICAS need to have the wheel "properly" straight to ensure the HICAS sensors read the steering position correctly. As Jeff says, check all 4 wheels are correctly alligned and ensure the technician sets the steering wheel dead straight.

Ok, just because alignment has been done, it doesn't mean the adjuster isn't seized in the bush. Whoever carried it out may have been able to move the eccentric bolt(s) just enough to get it in spec, or it may be seized in the correct position, which is still far from ideal.

 

Were the pressures checked before alignment?

 

Somewhere like TDI North in Warrington will provide a good service at this sort of thing.

 

But FFS...check your calipers aren't sticking before spending any more money, it's an easy, 15-20 minute job with your car jack :)
