My gearbox is fine selecting all gears at lower speeds. However when you go to select 5th on the motorway at over about 80 you can feel it grating as it goes in.

 

The clutch is quite stiff and bytes quite near the floor and you have to push it all the way down to engage gears, if I were a betting man I would say that it is probably a pressure plate problem.

 

Question is this, would you say that this sounds like clutch or do you think it is in fact the gear box?.

 

Also how do you check and top up the gearbox oil on these cars?

Mate, 4th to 5th is the weakest point of the Zed man box. Mine does it at the moment.

yes it only happens at higher revs.. I will get some and have a go with that. I just found the top up hole on the gearbox using the online service manual link.

 

How do you know how much to put in?

yes thing is when the engine comes out in the next few months is it worth getting it looked at or is it worth just doing the clutch and oil in the hope its that.

 

In the meantime I dont want to damage it so want to check and replace the gearbox oil.

If you have the funds, it might be advisable to think about buying a completely new box rather than have that one refurbished. Parts for a reconditioned manual gearbox come to more than a complete brand new 96+ gearbox (which is much stronger).

Think its 3.4 litres being redline oil american thats 4 quarts youl need 4 bottles its not cheap .

You fill it up on the side, and it's full when it overflows and no more will go in, bit of a ball ache, but ya can buy a special jobby to do it, i used a washing up liquid bottle with a tube on the end, took me ages!!!

How much is a 96 one roughly?

 

I will try and get some decent gearbox oil in there in the time being.

New 96+ gearbox is about $1800 from Z1, plus shipping etc. I am sure you can get one through MJP. Not sure what UK 'landed' price is on one though. I think Legrath may have priced one up at some point.

yep, 4th to 5th synco has worn out. I have a volvo that does the exact same thing. Low revs it's fine, higher revs it crunches.
