As I'm now between jobs and have as much money as an Ethiopian camel herder. I'm looking at tackling this myself.

so what's the best way forward

as you can see the last owner has had a VERY poor attempt and has overspray everywhere

Oh my giddy aunt. what a mess lol. Well black paint is your new friend, If you get some matt or satin black paint theres no reason why you cant spray on some of the trims too. (wind defector, screen moulding) but the targa rubber seals are gonna need something else to remove that red paint, or it'll make them go hard, crack and ultimately let water in. To remove the centre bar you have to drop the headlining, so you may not wanna do that. Why is there filler in the roof panel to start with??

id reccomend that you move the roof lining to see the extent of the damage underneath

Like Baz says black paint should sort it out.

I'd personally pull the rubber off and use a brillo pad to remove the overspray

Then unscrew the pop up things, rub them back and spray them with primer then black satin paint

Then get the old wire brush attachment on the drill and take the hole front bar right back to the metal to see what's left there

Ally mesh for the holes and i'd highly recommend rust eater then the metal filler that is open do now with ally pieces in there

Then the usual of flatting back, primer, flatting back, colour, flatting back then laquer if you need it.

Why on earth has the roof got filler in it! That has to be the very WORST case of over-spray I think I have EVER seen!>!?!!?!?!?!?!? Did Paul@SWZ paint that? :wack:

~You need to assess the extent of the rust under the filler first. If you don't want to spray all the trim black etc, use some cellulose thinners to remove the paint from the fittings but remove them from the car first.

If you spray black over the trim, it won't take long before you start to see the red again...

There is a product on the market, that the previous owner should of used, it's called........ "Masking Tape", and can be found in all sorts of shops!! ;)

Sorry mate, I can't add anything constructive to this thread, that hasn't already been said above :D

Bloody hell fire thats shocking.

If i was you i would remove everything i could with overspray on it and try to remove with white spirt or thinners. then remove the head lining a see from the underside how big the dent is. remove the old filler because from the picture it looks thick then with a block of wood supporting the outside surface tap out the dent from the inside best you can then fill prep and paint.

if you live anywhere near Chelmsford come over and i'll give you a hand.

I agree this is the worst attempt at a repair i've ever seen. I think the company that did it are called....Bodgeit & ****it LTD

I was planing on painting the front and rear panels black anyway.

I'll keep you updated on the progress.

I think they're called Wattle and Dorb Ltd! LOL. On a serious note, try saving to get it repaired to a good level. I've seen photos of the rest of your car and apart from the roof area, it looks really tidy. Get some new wind deflectors....plenty of those about, targa seals and a roof bar. Then get the filler examined.

get that bodge out first, then see what is what, i have a hammer and screw driver you can borrow if you like

Did the bonnet flip up and dent the roof in? You need to remove all the filler, have the dent (I guess thats whats underneath) pulled and then repaired properly, that amount of filler will always pop out with the first bump you go over.

If the paint used on the repair is acrylic paint (aerosol) then you can use a rag with petrol on it to wipe away the overspray, if you use cellulose thinners then some plastics will react to it. The reason the filler is coming off looks like they didn't prep the surface properly, if at all before filling it. If that is the case then all the filler will need removing and starting again from scratch. I have my own spray shop and have seen this so many times!

Would you say replacing the whole panel is the way forward. I don't want a half arsed repair, and I suspect filler would never give a perfect look

I also suspect the screen needs to come out to get it done

It really depends on what damage is underneath the filler. The best thing to do is take all the filler out and then post another picture, that will give the rest of us a better idea on how to advise you what way forward to go with it. Not long back we repaired a skyline which had loads of dents right across the roof and we took the roof lining out, tapped them back then filled them, the car was pushing 600bhp and the filler never even moved. If used properly you should have no problem filling the damaged area as long as the damage is not to major.
