the car only has 1 horn, on the passanger side.

there is no wire coming from the horn itself,

not can i see anywhere by the steering wheel/ignition box for it to go to the steering wheel.

i know the horn needs a 12+ just connected to it to work,

how do i go about wiring it, run a wire from the horn push button in the steering wheel, to the horn relay box? then another wire from the box to the horn itself?

or put a direct 12+ to it, but somehow put a wire inbetween going to the steering wheel? so its not on all the time?

Heres the wiring diagram for you, all of your components SHOULD already be there, you should not have to do anything major.

Have a look at the relay first, make sure it is there and that there are wires under it, then it'll be a case of searching around inside the bumper for where they should be!

The Horn replay is in the middle of the main Relay box in the engine bay...

the wire to conect to the horn should be in the side light / indicator loom

ive got the bumper off at the mo, there are a few wires i think have been cut by the horn itself,

wiring diagram is a bit technical lol

so wire the horn to the relay, (which gives the horn + )

then from the relay to the steering wheel by the looks yea???

been on the car today.

i can see a few wires in a loom by the horn.

(there are 3 looms, 1 for the fog light, 1 for indicator, and this third one)

il get a pic of it, but sure its for the horn. anyway open up the loom and theres 4 wires init. il get a pic of it next time :slap:

one of them are the 12+ id imagine, which comes from the relay.

looked at the steering wheel boss tho, and removed the casing etc.

what colour wire isit? i cant see NO wire spare?

Right, lets start again...........

Forget the steering wheel, all you need is the wires behind the bumper.

They are both GREEN, and there will be one per side.

This diagram was taken from the workshop manual and shows where they should be/come from.

Points E40 & E8 are the fog lamp (JSpec) or Combination Lamp (UK/Euro) loom plugs, follow this loom back a short distance and you'll see another wire come from it (as in the diagram) it could be taped though, so don't expect to see a green one. This single one should go to a single spade connector, this is the wire you need! E41 & E9

To test it get someone else to press the horn button while you listen to the relay, if you hear a 'click' then your system is working. Now test the wire you've found, if you haven't already got one, buy a cheap multi-meter from Halfruads or the the local pound shop.

There is only one wire as the OEM horns are Earthed through the bolt fixing. The new horn you buy will probably have two connections, one for the Earth, so you'll have to make a short lead up and connect it to an earth point yourself.

I hope that is straight forward for you, if not give me a shout

hey mate, thanks for advice,

on the E8 side (passanger)

i do see 1 green wire on its own. (on the drivers side, on E40, there are 4 thin wires, dont think there was 1 green)

so lets say i use the passanger side, that green one, thatl solve that,

but the steering wheel (aftermarket) does not have any wire from the horn button, nor can i see where to connect to?

what colour/which one in the steering column am i after?

Yes, that would work as they both come from the same place anyway.

You never said that part!!!!! ;)

Well that sheds a totally different light on things! Some 'TIT' has changed it over without any form of common sense whats-so-ever! How the bleeding hell has it passed an MOT last time around?!

Unless you can wire some sort of a horn button in somewhere, you'll have to buy a new steering wheel boss, that has the horn push wiring in it :headvswal

You could put an OEM one back on, that would solve the problem

Dave

Make sure you ditch the stock horn. It's absolutely pathetic! Get some bosch ones from an Omega or something.

I got mine from Halfrauds, they look cheap and tacky but sound really good, and as they are hidden anyway what they look like doesn't matter! Another good pair can be found on the 2.8 injected Capri (lesser models only had one horn), very good sound and same single fitment like our ones are!

how would putting the standard wheel work?

there isnt the wire that goes there?

im right in thinking the horn button sends a negative to the coil?

does anyone know which wire im looking for in the steeting column?

the standard one gota be a certain colour/one?

I don't think you're looking at this the right way... It's a steering wheel, it doesn't have a wire, other then up to the hub, it then works via a ring system that makes contact with a ring system on the wheel hub, which then has a wire from it to the horn button on the wheel. If someone hasn't installed the correct hub for the Z32, then it will probably be why it's not working. So my point is that you need the proper hub for the Z32, you can't just bodge it in (no offence meant there)

Hence my comment on using the OEM wheel, because it comes with all the correct internals ready to go straight on.

ah rite thanks mate,

i am using the Boss from my old car (TT) on a new car (NA)

workt fine on the old car, on this car tho, looks like it doesnt fit all the way back?

there are 3 sort of prongs that go in on the hub, asuming this is what you speak of, that makes contact with the boss?

  • Author

done it now :)

however, there really wasnt any wire that went up to the hub? the green/white one you speak of was nowhere to be seen????

so i ran a wire direct from the horn, to the steering boss, then another wire from the horn button to a 12+

so using the horn to provide the 12+ direct to the horn, bypassing all the relays/loom etc :)

Hi mate, not 100% sure about this but if there was a relay in there in the first place it maybe there for a reason. Typically that would be because the circuit you are switching (i.e. the horn in this case) draws more current than the switch (on steering wheel) and its wiring is rated for. In worst case this can lead to fire.

In this case it should be ok as I cant imagine a horn draws much current and it is not constantly on in the same way headlights are (am sure someone more informed on here will advise), but I would urge caution on bypassing any of the the proper looms, fuses and relays.

hmm, Nissan do put a lot of un-neccesary things on the car tho,

obviously the relay is there for a reason, but i dont know.

the end of the day tho, its only a horn, just makes a noise when it has 12 volts going to it.

the way i have wired it now just doesnt have a fuse or anything init, cant imagine it catching fire tho
