hi all

 

i'm in the process of rebuilding/ replacing my turbos and was thinking of using a kit off ebay thats been recommended on here:

my question is this, i believe my turbos are smoking because my car is decatted, if i use a kit like this, whats to stop the same thing happening again and my turbos smoking again?

 

is there any uprated seals i can use or anything i can do to make sure it stops, apart from putting a standard exhaust back on???

sounds good, what about the step gap piston seal tho. i think this is what i need for definate?

 

Checking on Melett's own web site and looking through the Garrett .pdf brochure, the Step Gap Piston Ring is only in the performance section, and NOT included in the 360 deg kit. There is a Piston Ring included which is a different part number to the one supplied by dunk300zxtt above. Now the kit(s) I've received contains the standard Piston Ring. now the way I look at it, it's an option that doesn't come as standard with the 360 kit, so unless someone can come up with a good reason for obtaining them, then I will fit what I've received. No disrespect to either dunk300zxtt or j1mmytt, but I don't just do something unless I know why I'm doing it :D

i rebuilt my own turbos and bought the 360 bearing separatly and the step gap seals separate, i only wanted the best for my turbos so they can withstand a good thrashing which they have so far with no issues whatso ever ;)

 

the main prob with the normal seal is it seals in a straight edge so once the seal loses a bit of its springyness or wears on the outside the seal is open and not sealing anymore so oil will get through the edge or the cut in the circle so to speak, the step gap still makes a seal even when its not completly compressed.... erm i think thats how it works, im no expert lol

 

iirc i think the best way to fit the seal is to make sure the edge is furthest away from the oil channel so it has less chance to get through paaaa i dunno.

Don't want to steal the thread but I was wondering; Is this a hard job to do? Reading this thread has made me think of doing mine on my new engine before it goes in. Engine has done less than 60k (kms) so is it worth doing while engine is out?

Good circlip pliers and be prepared for one at least one of the bolts in the zaust housing to snap other than that its not that bad a job, worst bits I had were , snapped bolts, big cir clip holding compressor housing ( doddle with snap on pliers) and the little cir clip that holds the bottom oil seal in place, fiddly thats all.

yes i would defo get them rebuilt as the engine is out, u never know when they might go pop. You wouldnt wanna have to take the engine out again :(

Did you just do the standard drill and retap on the bust bolts?

 

Well you have to be very carefull how you do it. The bolts are made from INCONEL, a material able to withstand high temperatures and keep it's strength. Unfortunately it is toughed than the cast turbo housing so the drill tends to wander off when drilling out (when drilling by hand).

 

You really need to take it to an engineering shop who can holt it rigid in a miller to drill it out.

 

@ Dave_Zed, you REALLY need to get step gap piston seals, you can then wind up the boost and forget about rear seal faliure. If I had stock rear piston seals I would forever worry about running 12+psi wondering when they would go.

 

For £25 it's peace of mind.............

yeah i only bought two, one for each exhaust end shafts, although there is another piston seal on the inside which doesnt take as much stress so the stock ones are ok for those but the shaft seals need to be tougher.

i'll need them too and by the look of it so do somethere people on here maybe we should see if we can but them in bulk or organise a group buy somehow?????

I've rebuilt 2 pairs of turbos if you have any problems give me a call didn't have time to read whole thread as I'm at work, (07737 012429 Alex).

I was lucky I had spare housings with clear holes, just as well.
