My rear window trim seal has kind of pealed up at the corners (as below). It's been like it ever since I got the car 6 months or so ago.

I've been told that the seals are no longer available new, and a second hand one is likely to be brittle and break if I tried to remove and fit it. Anyone any suggestions?

Thanks,

Phill

Maybe try some Sikaflex.

Thanks Paul, you don't have a link to a specific product do you?

They are available new, replacement would be the best solution.

Really? That would be great if they are, do you know where from?

It's not the finish of the trim that's the main problem, it's the fact that it's not sitting flush round the corners. I did do my front windscreen trims and targa trims with Plastidip, and I was going to do this one, but I didn't bother as I really just need a new one. Thanks though.

Most body shops suppliers would do this or something similar, just make sure it's the adhesive type and not the sealing type. Search Sikaflex you will find what you want.

Phill, The rear screen seal started as a soft plastic U section that over the years starts to shrink and hence the corners turn up, once this happens it had it.

Due to the U shape it is fitted over the glass first than the whole unit bonded in to the tailgate, this means two things, removal without cutting / breaking is near impossible and more important refitting is also near impossible due to the bonding material under the glass.

We use a universal soft rubber that is easy to fit and actually looks nicer than the original in my opinion, this come in rolls so can be cut to length, it molds in to the coners at the bottom of the screen real nice too, from memory is about £15.00 Any windscreen co should be able to supply it, if not give us a call.

Hi Jeff, thanks for that. You don't have any pictures of this stuff do you? I'm always a bit nervous about doing something non-standard and would like to be sure what it'll look like!

Your in luck, doing the very same job in the morning so will take some photos and post them up for you.

I replaced mine with new ones from MJP. I did as part of the respray so had the rear screen removed.

Here you go Phill as promised photo`s of the universal seal before and after fitting, there is still some slight adjustment required to the final fit with some extra soapy water the seal will sit even neater.

Grave digging here. Does anyone know if the seal above requires the rear window to be removed?

Yes, window needs to come out.

If fitting original Nissan trim the glass needs removing, to fit the universal rubber one it does not.

Jeff

Yeah it's the universal I was enquiring about Jeff, looks smart as well. Does the original just pull out? Where do I get the one you used to use?

How do you get round the gap between the top seal and the universal rubber seal? I'm guessing the corner trim tabs will now no longer fit?

Rear screen removal is fine providing you find an experienced glass fitter. Had my rear screen out twice, as has Joel and neither times they've broken. :)

Not really interested in paying for it to be removed if not necessary. Equally couldn't care less about having an OEM seal, so it seems like a perfect solution.

The original has to be cut out carefully making sure room is made to accommodate the new rubber, it can be a little tricky to get right but the rubber trim ends up looking better than the original and is slightly wider so any paint issues at the edges are covered.

The new seal has a barbed protrusion that is inserted into the gap left between the body and glass, it hook`s in, it also buts up to the top corner trims quite nicely, there are several designs that can be used see below, I have used the fourth one a few times, some you might need to adapt a little, I warm it up slightly and use a small amount of sikaflex on the corners, and a small line run elsewhere, insert the seal and once happy with the fit put masking tape over it every 12 inches and leave over night.

Cheers for your help Jeff, the first one I can find quite quickly. The last one, which I assume would be your preferred choice seems pretty hard to find. Once I get the seal i can then be happy with how much material to remove off the old seal. Boot keeps flooding atm which is annoying.

Be surprised if the trim is the leak problem as the glass sits on a deep layer of window bonding, common boot lid leak is from the wiper arm grommet and and after market spoilers, the boot floor can get wet from leaks around the rear lights.

Jeff

Cheers Jeff, I sealed the grommit and spoiler yesterday. Had lots of rain last night, happy to report the leaks stopped!

Now I've just got a pesky leak that appears to come out the targa itself.
