my Autobox was changing gears rather late without crunching or grinding and so have taken the chance to look at the fluid in the box.............

NOTHING!

yesterday i bought 5 litres of comma ATF to see if the car will make a difference and it all went in the box however i have gone to measure the box this morning and where the comma ATF fluid is a see through (ish) red and i am colour blind i cannot tell how high it is on the dipstick.....

any ideas?

Thats not becuase its Comma....its becuase its clean.

I guess you will need to have somebody else check it for you.

its @ 9 litres to fill the autobox mate if drained out just so you know...anyways you need to check the autobox fluid level when the car is running / tick over

procedure to check is engine on...park...drive...2..1..2..drive...reverse...neutral...then check the level...engine still running

cheers

i can see from your post colour is the issue...read a bit too quick.....that said the level must be checked when engine is running or you'll get it wrong regardless as to who is checking the stick

ahhh......

i was under the impression i could do it when cold as the dip stick has a different level for cold.

ok as my car has taken 5 litres will it be ok to run to temperature?

the dipstick was dry as a bone before putting in 5 litres (hopefully the only reason my gear changes were late)

Autobox is 7.7 litres for JDM and 8.7 litres for UK model.

Fluid level must be checked with engine running. Move gear selector through all gears, and then test it in park with engine idling.

You should check fluid when cold and warm, using the appropriate dipstick markers.

It's hard to beleive that your car needed 5 ltrs of oil, as going on Legraths figures you only had 2.7 ltrs of oil in your gearbox, if this was the case i'm sure your car would not move and to have an over filled gearbox can do a lot of damage.

A trick I use is to get a cloth or kitchen roll lay it flat, and then put the dipstick on that so it leaves an oily mark on it.

cheers for the tip matey :)

all i do know is that on cold and hot the gearbox dipstick didnt even have fluid touch the bottom of the dipstick. It took 5 litres however because i cant see the level i don;t know how full or overfilled it is

i will try your kitchen roll trick

Surely the dipstick is wet when there is oil on it and dry when there is none, the colour won't change that.

yes it was dry before all over the dipstick reading (no oil)

and yes it is wet now as i have put 5 litres in however the dipstick is silver colour and the fluid is clear so i cannot actually tell how high it is as it all runs to the bottom and creates a drip.

just wish i could add some food colouring to get a proper colour and tell the difference :rofl::rofl:

Rub some chalk on your dip stick, you will see the measurement then when you pull it out.

brilliant thinking :-)

now im going to take half day annual leave and get some chalk :smash:

  • Author

unfortnately no one sold any chalk WTF???????

looked in most shops around town...... :S

anyway santa will be round soon to try and help :)

  • Author

i have not driven it incase it is either not filled enough or overfilled.

once i find a way of measuring the dipstick accurately then i will test it. santa did say it looks like i have overdone it but not by anything horrific however my car is on a drive with a very very very slight incline and so it could go up more if my car gets level.

will my gear box make any noises being overfilled? how will i tell apart from the dipstick if i have over topped it?

no, he has to take around the corner so he can check on level ground, he should be fine, he`s prob only overfilled by a tiny amount but hard to tell until its somewhere an accurate reading can take place, also found a water leak from the back of the block so he`s not going to run it properly until he can sort that issue out as it looks like one of the little bastads has ruptured as it`s not the matrix pipes although they`re nice n crunchy, poor sod, it`s one thing after another.

i know....

damn car!

well i will have to find a pipe kit and then get it fitted. then i will have to get the pipework done properly as my vacuum pipes which had boost jets in run straight to the actuators!! boost solenoids are disconnected, mileage clock stopped working, need new O2 sensor, need gearbox filter changed,

luckily i had help from someone local when servicing my car however i still have 5 injectors to wire into the car and also the cambelt kit i bought to fit.

looks like i might need to SORN my car and just bite the bullet and rebuild it. but for now i will just get the water pipes fixed to see what else might go wrong :-(

i guess the last owner outsmarted me and knew the right time to get rid of it and unfortunately as i was struggling to find a zed that i MUST have i just could not help myself but to take this one.....

lesson learnt i guess

You still have a great looking car, and as long as the body and chassis are sound the rest are just mechanical problems, you will get there in the end.

thanks bud.

i know its going to be frustrating and in a way i am greatful my car is still driving after 20 years. it does does its just with the pipes and gearbox filter overdue a replacement i dont want to risk it :-)

either way unlike my old zed i have made a pledge to stick with this one and no matter what.... i will be the last owner it has

cheers
