auto box woe's

hi,can anyone help,i've got a problem with the box on my 92 non turbo,it selects park,reverse,neutral,drive but when in d it only goes in 1 gear but i think it my be 2nd,but if you put it in 1 it selects 1st and shift it to 2nd and it selects it but then nothing it does'nt seem to select 3rd.any ideas,
