Ok guys and gals, a strange one this........

After a stretch of motorway driving today (not unduly fast I might add), I was sat in a queue at traffic lights in Edinburgh. The windows were open and I got a waft of what smelt very like freshly laid tar. This isn't the first time that this has happened and on both occasions there were no roadworks nearby.

Clutching at straws but .....are the cats sooo hot that they're causing a reaction in the road surface whilst the Zed is stationary?

Looking forward to your thoughts - Andy

Oi! Stop It! :nono: :slap:  :D

I got similar smells and my autobox started shifting up and down by itself. Getting a manual conversion now though....hope its not that bad for you though bud!

Do you have a small oil leak? The common one being from the rear main seal. It drips on the gear box runs down and when driving gets blown on to the red hot exhausts. Then when you later pull up you can smell it burning off.....

I had this and I will say the leak was only very small. Replaced the leaking seal when my manual conversion was done.

Sometimes a bit of a blatt can make the dipstick for the auto box pop out with pressure and some transmission fluid can be ejected. Maybe this is what is getting on the exhaust and smelling. Look at the dipstick to see if its in its sheath or poped up an inch or so.

sweet smells...bound to be ATF fluid...other than your auto box could be hicas / power steering leak....any drips on to the drive / road when parked up mate?

Ok, I've put her up on stands and crawled underneath...............

There's a bit of a leak from the autobox sump pan and that's blowing back over the exhausts (see photos) the engine sump and back of the block are both dry. I tightened up all the sump pan bolts (half to a full turn each - they were a bit slack) and dried off the area. Time will tell if I need to replace the pan gasket or not.

That's the least of my worries, the car's a bit moth eaten underneath (if moths eat metal - that is). :(

Yes that sump looks like it rotting nicely, get that cleaned up and protected before it goes through....or you will have a proper leak!
