Hi all,

My car (Radrons) has the Z centre Electric fan kit on it with the Z1 Howe Radiator. Now I believe the fan is set to come on around 85-88 Deg C.

The Fan is pretty much on all of the time once the Engine gets to temp and seems to run on for approx 10-15 mins after the car is switched off.

The temp Guage (Stock) sticks pretty much in the Centre although I know these are unreliable.

Now I think the engine is probably running a little hot and after doing some searching on here it seems that people have reverted back to the Viscous unit and that this seems to provide better results in terms of overall running temp.

So is this the case or should I stick with the Electric Fan? I am awaiting a License for ConZult as Ron is getting it switched to me so I'll be able to tell exactly what the running temp is. I'm hoping it's not much above 90 deg TBH.

Also on the Fan units where does it take a measurement for Coolant Temp?

Thanks in advance for the replies, :duffer:

You may want to put a beefier fan on, some people have had success, try doing a search as I can't remember of the top of my head!

Cheers Mate, I was wondering if that's the way to go... I don't know if it's worth just going back to the viscous unit though?

After "jimmer" rebuilt my engine it ran too hot due to the electric fan not being man enough to cool her down. Went back too the viscious and temp is stable.

Cheers Mate, This is pointing in the Direction I thought it probably would... I think I'll put a post in the items wanted section...

Had an electric on mine and never wandered any hotter that 175 F.

If you have it wired up to come on at a certian temp, then it should have it's only sensor.

Either welded into the rad or one of the hard pipes.

I have a 16" 3000CFM electric fan - no issues yet - but this is my first summer with this config - I will let you know. (If we have a summer) ;-)

It would be interesting to see if a 16" is any better as mine is the 14 inch unit which I feel maybe a little lacking... Thanks Andy...

Are you a 100% certain the settings are correct in when it comes on ?

Just stick with the electric one for a wee while longer till you know for certain.

Then we can look at what temps the car is really running at with the conzult and possibly address the problem then, if there is one.

Whilst your waiting, it might be worth just opening the bleed valve on the top of the koyo with the engine running to see if there's any air there, only take a minute or two ;)

Thanks for the Advice Smithy!

Will do... I'm Not 100% certain but pretty sure Ron would have set it correctly, everything else on the ca is pretty much perfect.. I will wait though and get ConZult on it to see what temp the engine is actually running at when the Fan comes on.

I have a viscous unit on the way but I won't put it on unless completey necessary.

Thanks

Paul

Im using an AMS Rad and am using a viscous fan but without a shroud......have noticed recently that it tends to sit at a slightly higher temp and can go up to 212.....it never used to go above 207......could a shroud be one of the reasons or am i missing something

Defintely the shroud, as it directs the draw from the fan through the radiator.

I believe the fan is set to come on around 85-88 Deg C
Probably a bit low as this is the average running temp. I'd set it to around 90 personally

Cheers mate...

Well I went for a run Yesterday and gave it some beans... Temp peaked at 87 deg but fan was on so I think it's probably set a little low no worries there though.. On the Motorway it's general temp was about 84-85 with town temps down at 82.

I know it wasn't hot out but wasn't cold either... I'll keep an eye on it and see what it does when the weather heats up a bit but I believe those readings are about perfect?

Thanks again all,

Paul

You aren't giving yourself enough leeway there, as at 92 IIRC the ecu starts to arrest performance because of engine temp.

Cheers guys,

Hmmmm... I think A shroud might be in order, The Z centre ad says the fan kit eliminates the need for a shroud...?

As said the running temp seems OK at the moment but I'll have to wait until the weather heats up a bit to see what effect that has...

Luke also does a particular shroud that fits that fan kit mate, i know cos i helped him do it ;) So ask him on a price for it.

However, it is only there to ensure that the electric fan works at it's most efficient and many run a fan without the shroud as Luke is the only supplier in the UK/Europe who offers a shroud with his fans.

Am still thinking something else with yours mate, so let us know about the temp readings you get with the conzult.

Oh and if it was mine, i'd have it come on at a MAX of 88 :-)

Cheers mate... I believe the fans coming on at 83 deg judging by the figures I gained last night... Is this to early?

Well from past research i've done, Nissan seemed to suggest 82 was the ideal running temp for optimum performance. So 83 is a wee bit early to be honest. It;s only meant to come on when it reaches a point above the suggested level, but before the suggested maximum level, which is 92. So 87 actually would be bang in the middle and certainly many Zeds are running mid to high 80's.

I think little things like what type of coolant some peeps use might determine the odd degree or two as well, some cheaper coolants are just winter and some more decent branded stuff are summer/winter coolant.

Also checking the overflow tank is partly filled (paseenger side) and finally whilst parked on a slope (upwards) open the radiator top bleed screw for any excess air bubbles with teh engine running and some warmth in the rad.

Just little things to ensure everything is in tip top condition if you know what i mean ;)

Yep... I know mate... I think I'll be taking it up to Geoff to cast his eyes over in the nearish future and as said previously the temp maxed at 87 and that was after pushing it hard for about 3-4 mins... like I say I'll wait and see what happens as the weather heats up but average running temp on Motorway was 84-85 and pootling round town 82-83 consistantly, so I think it's OK at the moment, however I'll be interested to see what happens in high ambient temps I'm guessing everything will raise up by a few degrees... What temps are you seeing when the ambient outside temp is say 25 deg?

Thanks again for your help,
