Everywhere I go, people always ask Why I bought the 300zx!.. It really irritates me. Every car show I have been to, their's hardly any 300zx's there..

The cars which get the most praise which really boils my piss are the Supra's and the Odd Skyline...

My 3 best friends have jap cars, One has a Supra, one has a GTO and the other an Rx7.. So we are always arguing over who has the best motor.. But, I know the 300zx is the best of the 3 in every way, and I know I am going to sound biased as I own one, but still...

The Rx7 with it's wacky engine.. and cramped interior doesn't do it for me..

The Supra is a good car but I still feel that fast and the furious done it the world of good, boosting up prices and popularity, just like the Rx7 for that matter.

The GTO, just looks like an MR2 on steroids, and is technically a dodge stealth..

For me, the 300zx has the nicest styling (Exterior and Interior), and thus being further complimented by lamborghini even taking the headlight design into it's diablos..

The Interior is far nicer than any GTO/Supra/Rx7, roomier, better feeling, and passengers have more comfort.. albeit the rear seats are cramped.. but nowhere near as bad as the other 3.

I'm no expert when it comes to Engines, but I reckon the VG30DETT is far superior in terms of strength to the other 3.

Anyways, my gripe is that the 300zx is such a great car, and a Classic, but the other cars of the same "league" and "generation" The supras, gtos and Rx7s.. just seem to get more praise?.. When they are no where near as good and dont offer the same standards as the ZX... What happened for the 300zx to never get asmuch hype as the others?... Back to what I said earlier about car shows, nobody seems to know much about the ZX either, people always ask me "How Fast is it" and "You don't see many of these around"..

I hope the put a ZX in the next fast and furious movie, because I can guarantee everyone will want one and our re-sale prices if we ever chose to sell will rocket up... But I can't see it happening...

I don't believe the car to be underrated, I just think it has an image problem. It's odd as the Z32 on launch was very well rated indeed and wiped the floor clean of the mk3 supra, GTO and was up there with the Porsche 928.

Its image has degraded over the years due to the fact that newer cars in the same league from other manufacturers have super seeded it which have been marginally better and have been newer. The Mk4 supra, as ugly as it is was also well rated. These have never really been replaced by anything, neither has the GTO, which, to be honest has a pretty dowdy image too. The Z32 has always seen to be the poorer relation to the Skyline and you will always get asked 'why didn't you just get a Skyline' comments. BUT, most people that bought the Z, didn't want a Skyline to begin with. I could have bought one when looking for mine, it just didn't have what I was looking for in a car.

There are also, or rather 'were' huge volumes of tatty, smokey unloved examples which have given the car a rep it shouldn't have deserved bringing the prices of them to rock-bottom. The monkeys then got hold of them, chaving them up with fibreglass clap-trap, shoddy body kits and tasteless accessories driving the image of them through the floor.

Older people appreciate this type of car as they know what it is capable of. Younger people 'the fast and furious generation' think of them as just a cheesy luxo barge and don't hold it in high regard.

I think their image is on the up. Most of the really poor examples have been scrapped. The car has turned back into an enthusiasts car, its rarity value is getting better and the grey-import market has all but dried up. Most cars that are left tend to be better looked after versions too.

That's just how I see it.

Wise words there Si.......

.........apart from your spelling of superceded;)

Richard:D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

A standard Z vs a 997 turbo (porsche) is a no match. Unless the porsche driver is missing a throttle pedal and some eyes its going to make the Z look silly.

Alanz - what spec's yours mate? Mine was at 480ish bhp (412@wheels). It was a decent run for my mates 997T in a straight line but braking and cornering - no chance.

Not taking sides here, but people always seem to neglect to mention the drivers capabilities! Just cos a car is worth a fortune and has fancy technology, does'nt necessarily make it faster than another type of car if the driver is shit. If its all automatic and the person just has to point and squirt in a straight line then fair enough - no chance, but if they're not a 'good' driver then they can quite easily be beaten.

My 2p :D

Agree completely, thats why I said the 2 cars should be tested back to back by an unbiased racing driver....the Stig! That would highlight the fastest car.

Little off topic now, but good discussion all the same!

I would'nt even need to see that! The stats clearly show the porker to be much faster etc...... And i firmly believe that tested back to back the 911 would win no question! My point was merely to highlight that the drivers make a massive difference in the real world.

Some plonker of a footballer with more £'s than brain cells and no driving talent could be beaten by a good driver in something that would'nt normally stand a chance. :D

Oh and on topic - I think they're underrated as they're seen as a heavy old car that costs a fortune to keep and modify/repair.

This means that the young 'uns can go out and buy a tart box like an impreza for a couple of grand, mess it about a bit for another £1-2k and have a car that accelerates harder, stops better and turns better.

There's also racing and film heritage. The skyline won pretty much everything it was entered for and the impreza/evo have had a rally thing going for years.

The Z was never really raced outside of japan - a bit in america but wasn't dominant so never had its laurels to show.

As for film placement - F+F did it for supras and RX-7's.

So there's not been the great uproar over them that there has over other similar cars.

In my opinion the RX-7 handles better - its more chuckable.

The supra has the better engine. Its stronger from the factory and easier/cheaper to get more power.

The GTO is a big heap of steaming dog mess that feels like its got a lot of power until you look at the speedo (or the car overtaking you).

The Z sits in its own little space not really biting to any of it.

To me its by far and away the best GT car from that era as its trying to be a GT car - not a racetrack refugee or a dyno monster.

It was designed to be the best car that nissan could build at the time - not to win races or to have silly numbers - just to be the nicest to drive.

I think they did well.

The supra might have big dyno numbers and is slightly (very slightly) quicker but it feels like a big lazy boat to drive and only seems happy on the throttle.

The RX-7 can corner well but loses out in ride quality, has absolutely no guts at all and no room for your shoulders.

The GTO is still a steaming pile of dog mess.

At the end of the day, I' sure here, we'd all agree. The Zed rocks!

I'll go with that :D

300zx vs 997 turbo - Stock for stock, absolutely no doubt about it, the porsche wins.

Modified though anything can beat anything. Look at the SPLparts 300zx and the UAS 300zx, they beat more powerfull fully modified race spec 993 and 997 Turbos out on the track.

I bet this thread is now linked to the Porsche fanbois website now and they are all having a good chuckle!

More than likely, but the 300zx isnt in the same league or time zone as a 2 year old 911, now show them a GTR and they might be a bit less hysterical.

standard 300, maybe.....

My 300 modded by "Jimmer".....

I think not sonny. ;)

My 2p. I'd like to see yours down santapod linned up against a porker the same as you saw.

My gut says you'd be eating your words. I think the bloke was looking at you thinking "what a moron" not "he's right" lol

What? No race heritage!!!!

The Z ripped the piss out of EVERYTHING it came up against on track and was a phenomenon!

Don’t know about the Z32 but the Z brand has an awesome racing past. But then so does Skoda in rallying

thats a funny comparison. have you seen the way a 997 puts the power down? the car also has almost no turbo lag. It is stupid fast and will embarrass alot of Q-cars. The power delivery is something to be experienced. It would run circles round a Zed on track. As much as i love mine, i know my limits on what my zed can take on. driver abilities or not.

I agree the 300zx is underrated compared to some of the other bigger jap cars , but there was a 300 in F&F 4 all be it for around 1.5 seconds !!

but i still don’t feel that type of publicity is in the Z's best interests :)

i agree allot of people just dont know much about them , power output , spec etc but that's one of the reasons i bought it lol

Chris :)

Spot on matey......:D

and it was designed by computer, a first in its class!!

Try looking for your Z along a line of parked cars , for a start : most of them are so tall , you won`t be able to see it . Then think , " Would I rather have any of those more modern lumps of practicality ? "

I always say " No thanks "

If that`s what I wanted , I wouldn`t have a Z32 , and I wouldn`t be in this Club . Just my twopennorth .

Where, on god's earth, do you get your pic's from Si?????

I search day and night,
