Bulb type for dash clocks illumination?

Before taking mine out, just want to know what the bulb type is for the back light illumination on the dash clocks?

Better still, does anyone know the LED rating for those for equivalent LED bulbs?

Thanks

Bulb type is 501

no idea about LED Ratings.....but if your getting LED's make sure you get the wide angle cluster versions to spread the light around or you will have dark area's

Where can I get those? The 'bay?

...also, just to confirm Dave, they are the same as the sidelight bulbs?

501 is the same fitment as sidelight bulbs yes, but have to be carefull with the ones behind the clocks as the size of the bulb cluster can mean it wont fit properly......its best to buy from one of the companies that others have mentioned previously...I cant remember the name of where I got mine, but there are a few threads.

I know the ones, these types then as opposed to the large high powered types...

I recall something about requireing an inline 12v resistor...you can buy them with the resitor built in, or you can solder them on yourself. ALthough I dont remember the resistor for the dash clocks, just the pods.......

sorry, my info is sketchy, its been a while since I did it.

Ultraleds did them.... http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/u509tw509t-twist-bulb-custom-white-frosted-p-954.html

Not anymore. :(

Cheers Dave. I've just found all the info on the LED bulb types too.

Should have just searched I guess! ----> :o

Boy that was some time ago ;) I've chucked the blue ones out and replaced them with red LED's and white dials (ala 99 spec ;) ) now

Over 6000 entries on eBay Si :D

Just seen Dave. Thanks. I'm after the white ones. IIRC, ours have 5 main illumination bulbs don't they??

Nope, it's 4 mate + the fuel gauge, which caused me no end of trouble when I tried to fit a flashing one in there...... basically it blew something, didn't work and then when I refitted a standard LED it stayed on all the time  but has stopped since :D

Is the fuel gauge a different bulb? So, each gauge has an individual bulb, but the fuel gauge has the extra one for the low fuel warning light...is that correct?

The fuel gauge is still a 501, but I was just trying something different. In that old thread, above, open the second Word doc and there is a pic of the rear of the clocks....... think I've still got the original pics here somewhere

I've seen that. Could get a red normal LED. Or I could leave it I spose.

Thought about doing every single one....not sure I can be buggered to do that though!

What you mean 'every single one'? There's only the four! well plus the three small ones underneath, which I removed............. Or do you mean the side pods as well? It makes a huge difference to the cockpit bud, yet keeping it subtle, if you see what I mean?

No, I mean all the check control bullbs, indicator bulbs too etc.

I will be doing the side pods at some point, again with white LEDs.

I fitted white LEDs to my previous car and it was nice nice to look at. Not a fan of blue/red or whatever colour etc...no offence to anyone that has them, I just love the crisp look of the white LEDs over the faded yellowy bulbs in stock mode.

I am guessing the fader will still work. I know they don't on cars with a rheostat type of dimmer control, but the Z works via a small micro chip doesn't it?

si, go for blue led's......

looks great mate!!

Al.

I wouldnt bother doing the fuel light with an led as the original 501 filament bulb dims up or down or constantly on, depending on the fuel level. leds prefer a more constant voltage whether dimmed or on full, but dont like the voltage fluctuation created by the fuel light circuitry.

Hows it do that then, surely it's either on or off? Never seen mine (before I fitted the LED) fluctuate at all!

The bulb dims on and off with the fuel level, my fuel has been running low many times over the past few months and believe me it does.

on my van if the fuels low it flashes on and off and more constant the lower the fuel gets on my zed as the fuel is getting below the line the bulb dims up and down slightly, becoming more constant when nearing empty.

Sorry Dave, i didnt explain that very well lol

I dont mean there is a dimmer module for the fuel light, its that the filament bulb when it receives a flicker of voltage the bulb appears to dim up and down, but will be on full once the reading is virtually empty
