But, if you're going to be using them for that, you may as well get something cheaper and more rugged...(for some strange reason, you might understand my warped mind, but the Defender is the intellectuals' 4x4.)

Cheaper ?? Defender is the least depreciating vehicle on the road !

I wouldn't even buy a P38. See no purpose for them what so ever. :)....unless you're going to do this with them...

Never driven or been in one then Si?

They make fantastic Long distance tow vehicles. I have done literally thousands and thousands of miles in P38's travelling up and down the country collecting cars and I cant really think of any other vehicle I would want to do it it.

The height and size make them excellent for towing, height adjustable suspension makes loading a heavy laden trailer so simple, the engines are very torquey and smooth.....and combine that with High end Bmw/merc style luxury and loads of space it makes them ideal.

off topic i know, but i had a drive of my mates 52 plate X5 3.0 manual diesel the other day, was really impressed

I really like X5's, I would have one. I dont care if they are not as good as other 4x4's off-road....its not what its for, they are much better than all the others on the road and the 4wd still offers great all-round winter road handling.

They are lovely to drive and quick too. They look great, I like the high seating position, lots of space and safe for the family.

i was impressed with the torque of the thing, not as big inside as i thought, but felt just like a car rather tan a big barge as some 4x4's do

Horrid things. I'd rather have a decent 4wd saloon. See no real point them other than off road vehicles or towing cars.

I would have a disco any day, I live up a silly hill and a good high 4x4 would be better for me

Woooooooo buy mine:D

p38's....a pile of poo 38 ft high :)

got a disco 1...goes anywhere...would prefer the special edition tomb raider defender :D

See, see, i told you all, but you wouldnt listen!:p

I was considering buying a disco a couple of years ago, glad I did'nt now.

I followed a new shape X5 yesterday and really liked the look of it, not so keen on the X6.

I've either owned or driven and worked quite a few 4 x 4's.

Best road holding, handling & performance - our X5 4.6is Year 2002

Best all rounder - Toyota Amazon - Year 1999

Most luxurious - Range Rover - Year 2008

Most troublesome - Isuzu trooper 3.0d Year 1999

Awful to drive (but unbreakable) - Toyota Hilux Year 1996

I drove a landrover discovery and thought it was terrible. It was a 1996 diesel. I also drove the mitsubishi pajero and thought it was ok, but gave me nothing to suggest, that I would want to buy one. Also drove the L200 but don't like the leafspring suspension. The landcruiser is an excellent machine and a good work horse, but I never drove one long enough to get a good feel. But it is a smaller relative than the Amazon.

The only jeep that I bought new was the Trooper when the new 3 litre diesel engine version came out. It broke my heart. Continuous problems, covered under warranty, but just a pain in the arse nonetheless.

Regarding the X5 being pointless, I disagree wholeheartedly. People don't buy 4x4's so that they go out into a field and plough the daylights out of it. Yes it is used for bringing the child to school, but it has a whole lot of other practical applications for me, such as pulling a horse box etc..

Depends how you look at it, if you were to go offroad you cant beat Land Rover, Pajeros break, Hilux's have gay freewheel hubs with lockers on the front, and, i disagree with the ''inderstructable'' Hilux, ive seen many of them broken, and thats on the road! Troopers dont feature diff lock to my knowledge, L200s have similar power to a Robin Reliant. In fact id say the best one you mentioned was the Landcruiser. But it still doesnt compare to a Defender

i read somewhere that according to the DVLA something like over 85% of all landrovers ever built are still road going/worthy...pretty good for a mass produced 4x4

you need a proper range rover Pete..V8 with a pro comp 2" lift and mud tires;) in low range ive never ever found any hill or terain that has halted it:bow::bow:

Woooooooooo land rovers rule

Mine is the best landy in the world!!!

Its a P38 rangey 4.6 HSE I love it! 3k to buy it has lpg and does about 40mpg.

I live on a farm and its a very very nice way to travel. I have done over 1500 business miles in the last 2 weeks and it has not missed a beat. Normal cars and car type 4x4s dont cut it where I live too much grit and rubbish. I had an A6 and spent about 800 a year just repairing the suspension!

My wife has a freelander TD4 which is also an excellent car. There is no reason to drive a 4x4 unless you live off asphalt IMHO, If I lived in a town I would have a 5 series all day long but sadly I cant as it would be permamnently covered in mud!

My brother had a hilux and it never gave a moments bother. Really used and abused it. Went up mountains, through bogs and all, when hunting.

The standard Irish trooper did not have the differential lock, but I believe the UK one did. The one I imported from Cyprus (cheaper with more extra's as standard) was meant to have it, but didn't when it arrived, so I got compensated.

The landcruiser is a good vehicle by all reports. As I said I had the big brother and it was brilliant.

Never had the pleasure of driving or working a Defender. To look at, you'd guess them to be a serious workhorse, but I wouldn't expect to be the best on the road.
