Ministers say they are on course to meet current road casualty targets

Proposals to bring down speed limits in areas of Britain where there is a higher risk of accidents have been announced by the government.

Reductions from 30mph to 20mph in urban locations and 60mph to 50mph in the countryside are being considered.

Yes I agree, there is a time and place for 'racing about' ...... but come on 20mph is a bit ridiculous!!! Some roads that are currently 30mph are stupid enough as it is!!!!! :headvswal

think the 20mph might apply to school areas which i aggree 110%

I would say this is just another way to raise revenue, they will put new signs up and there will be speed cameras everywhere.

if you get up to 10mph outside the schools near me you would be bloody lucky.

when my 10 year old daughter walks out the school gates and stands 6" from the road ide like to think cars, lorrys, and anything that wieghs tonns is traveling no faster than 20mph:(

Im also for the reduction of speed. as it will only be in the worse parts of the uk. most proberly where the speed cameras already are :)

I thought around schools and residential areas it was already 20mph??? We have dual carridgeways that are 30mph - thats where I thought it might take effect..

Here in most areas there are already signs up and down the roads outside schools which

a) warn you there is a school ahead and

b) warn you to drive slow by use of a sign or those flashing laser jobbies

I was watching a programme, can't remember what it was called or what channel, where basically on a single stretch of road - there was a ridiculous amount of 'no u-turn' signs within a space of like 10 meters each.

The guy reporting on this, drove up with the camera counting them and it came to something stupid high figure and he also mentioned that each of those 'no u-turn' signs cost around £200 each.

No wonder they need more money from us - they just blow it on anything and everything :slap:

Too right - lol - those mums know how to block roads that even the cyclists struggle to get through

They double park, they park on double yellows, they park on pavements - they probably cause alot of accidents where kids try walk behind or infront of their stupidly parked car and can't see if cars are coming etc.....

znut, anyone who drives passed a school at silly speed's want's there ball's cut off anyway, even if the speed limit is 30mph outside a school, with kid's on the pavements I find it hard to get up to twenty just incase one of them jumps in the road.

They can cut speed limits all they want, people will drive however fast they want to! Ultimately to enforce it, they would have to literally control our speed (which no doubt will happen eventually!!). So hey ho i'll keep on moving thru life - only difference this kinda thing makes is that when you do get caught they can fine you even more than now.

HERE, HERE.

I have to agree with the reduce speed to 20mph around schools and play grounds ,my wifes freind"s daughter 9yrs old has lost the use of he lower body, some one hit her doing 40mph out side a park (play ground)

Agree its great outside schools and housiing estates etc

But national speed limit?

Was driving down one of my favorite roads the other day and its gone from national speed limit to 40! Can sit at 60+ with no dramas at all. Then I'm on a very twisty almost single track and its national speed limit and you would really have to push it to sit at 60 all the way down there.

Surly should be the other way round?!

Although doing almost 60 down the single track was kinda hairy but fun lol

Grrr

Only 1 or 2 country lanes i know where you can do 60 comfortably on! I dont dare go past 50 anyways on country lanes! No point to be honest risk of crashing is alot more for the sake of getting to your destination 2minutes quicker!

I'm sure they'll get a lot of support for genuine 20mph areas.... From me for one...

But, why don't they up the limit to 75 or 80 on motorways at the same time ?

Most traffic on motorways (except HGVs) is travelling about 85 anyway so what difference would that make ?

I just think the whole worlds gone mad anyway

yep agree mate

20mph outside schools is good - but it should be variable; IE weekends, holidays and "out of hours" back to 30mph.

20mph in normal urban areas is just daft; modern cars with ABS etc can stop far quicker than 75 feet from 30mph.

I don't agree with reducing national speed limit from 60 to 50 on single carriageway roads at all. I heard one car hater say that most people drive along our rural A roads at 50 anyway so there will be no difference. Rubbish - most normal non-Rover/Honda drivers younger than 80 will safely drive at 60-70mph and overtake the slower folk. Thing is, those people who do drive along safe clear A-roads at 50 now will no doubt slow down to 40 if the limit is reduced.

I have lost count of thetimes I've come up behind someone doing 50 on a clear dry straight 60mph road; then when there is a short stretch with a 50 limit, the twat slows to 40. Why??? These annoying people who "think" they are safe drivers will always drive 10mph under any limit - they sit in lane 2 of a motorway at 60 when there's nothing else around!!

No; let's give RESPONSIBLE drivers more credit and allow them to chose their own safe speed on national limit roads. Reducing limits unnecessarily just causes frustration and will no doubt contribute to accidents elsewhere; ie when drivers held up on open A-roads speed up to 40 through villages to make up for lost time.

Bloody nannying anti-car anti-freedom state. Vote the b@stards out!!!

Richard:(

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yeah, Bursledon Road is one of them! Why the hell is that dual carriageway with concrete walls either side and metal railings a 30 limit? Absurd!

No point to be honest risk of crashing is alot more for the sake of getting to your destination 2minutes quicker!

Reminds me of something my dad said when we were both driving 200 miles up to Edinburgh from Leeds to my brothers place for xmas.

We both set off at the same time and he said "Drive steady you won't get there any quicker"...

Me in Z: 2hrs 10 mins

Parents in Rover 400: 5hrs

I'd been sat watching TV for 2 hours by the time he got there

Have to agree with 20 limits in some residential and school areas but the 60 down to 50 sounds like a great money earner for the speed cameras.

They've got to get all that tax back somehow and you can bet it will be motorists paying up the £3000 each that we've all paid out to rescue the banks

My area is alreayd 20mph at any school nursery high school etc.

Signs are up and when the lights are flashign at it that is the current speed limit, if no lights flash the its 30mph

No they wont adapt a way to control our speeds, where would the source of income come from then? they will loose millions in producing this and loosing out on speed fines.

As most have said i agree with 20 limits near schools etc , and poss proven high risk area's etc,

but a general cut from 60 to 50 is just for more revenue in my book :nono:, and wont make a great deal of difference

I'm sure the reason they are thinking of bringing in the 20 limit at the same time as a 50 limit is so everyone thinks what a great idea it is for child safety and the 50 limit gets completely forgotten about until we can all be fined.

If anyone protests the politicians will just turn it into a an argument about irresponsible drivers not caring about the little children.

The whole car tax and insurance scheme in this country is a complete con designed to catch people out and make money on fines.

Why should you have to insure multiple cars on separate policies when in the rest of the world you just insure the driver?

If you want to lay up your car for a few months you then can't move the thing if it needs repairing without taking out a full policy again as nobody will insure a car for less than a week at a time without stupid rates. I got quoted £50 a day to insure my Clio while it's up for sale in case someone wants to test drive it!

No wonder people get caught out for driving uninsured - I had 2 policies I was paying for that covered me for driving other cars but got pulled for driving my Z to a garage without insurance because it's own policy had expired by 2 days.

If the driver was insured that kind of thing would never happen but this government brainwashes people into thinking it's acceptable.

I remember a forum member from Europe coming over here to collect his new Z from a UK importer and finding his policy which applies in mainland Europe didn't cover him here and he would have to take out a full annual UK policy to drive it home by ferry. What a joke!

Car tax has to be paid on my 3 cars when I can only use one at a time.

Fuel is taxed so much that you can't afford to run a luxury car and if you want to save fuel by buying a small city car for big mileages at work you can't fit your family in it and have to tax that too, costing you more money.

You can't go fit big items in a tiny city car so you have to pay to get stuff delivered on a truck which is even worse for the environment.

Car tax can't be paid by direct debit or in installments like any other business would offer and you can't renew it early when you might have the cash available you have to do it at the end of the month when you've probably spent up.

If they made it easy they would lose out millions on fines!

Rant, Rant, Rant! LOL

 amen, and what's always got me is what difference does it make what car u've earned ur no claims bonus on? , surely it relates more to the proven track record of the driver (skills and awarness..etc) just my 2p

People once thought the earth was a cube - just cos you can't foresee a way right now, does not mean it won't happen.
