Best car I've ever driven............?

...........................Possibly!

A friend of mine who happens to be a car dealer invited me to drive his latest bit of kit for sale.

And I must say, I loved every second of it - it's a Merc SLK 55 AMG and it's awesome!!

Lovely V8 power and noise - superb acceleration and road holding and absolutely amazing brakes; yet so civilized. I think I could happily have one as a daily driver

Now how can I convince Julia that I really need one...........

Richard:D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

The only way is to take julia out in it lol, i work for merc's and driven some of them they are really nice and go really well.

Regards Andy

I am falling in love with the CLS63 - see one every day on my way to work! What a beast that is

My daily driver is a Mercedes S class Limousine, & for me that is my best drive, second place I would give to a BMW 540i I used to have

Mine as well:dance:

I always thought of Mercedes as quite an upmarket high quality car, but recently i've seen a few mercs a few years old and they were starting to rust

I have no doubt they are good runners, my dad has an s class also and altho its quite boat like its a nice drive. So i know they're a good car in lots of ways i'm just appalled that after a few years such expensive so called quality cars start to rust

I know she'll like it - my daily driver is an SLK350 and that's a superb car......

.....however I don't think she'll understand why I really really need a 5.5 litre V8 monster....;)

Brilliant idea, Athene!!

And because I hate the green lobby and could really get used to 20 degrees in winter perhaps I'll run it on Super and drive everywhere in 2nd gear just to make sure:rofl:

My thoughts exactly - and all the more reason for us to have 3 litre twin turbo beasts:tongue:

Richard. I'm just saving for my next car now. Have decided on either the SLK or a Monaro.

I don't think I could stretch to an AMG55 but have my eyes on the 350 manual.

Would you say the 350 is still pretty quick as sports cars go?

Do you think it's worth finding a manual. Never driven a tiptronic auto, don't know anything about them at all.

Do owners generally take out extended warranties on them, or is that only really essential with the AMG? ie, what's the worst that can go wrong/blow up on them.

Cheers, Keith.

Mercedes cars do rust quite bad, however, Mercedes UK will repair all rust under a ten year paint garauntee as long as the car has a full MB service history and the rust is not caused by stone chips or accident damage

family and friends have had 5 mercs between them and they all had problems from dash boards and door cards removed to oil and fuel leaks all with in the last 4 years uncles m class was almost falling apart so he got rid

Worst car I ever had was a Merc and I swore I'd never get one again. Changed it for an X5 120 miles away so that I would never have to look at it or see it again.

I have not had any experience with Mercs but I have always favored them above any German car out there,I really thought the build quality would be much better than that:shock:

Mercs have had a very bad rep for build quality and reliablity for the past 10-12 years or so. They've spent quite a lot of time near the bottom of the JD power surveys. They are supposed to be trying to improve it.

Hi Keith,

The SLK350 is a decent and fast sports car - 0-62mph is perhaps slightly quicker than a stock 300zx TT at 5.6s (or 5.5 for the auto; yes with big engined Mercs the autos are faster;)). Remember the ZX's time of 5.6s is for 0-60...... The AMG 55 has a 0-62 of 4.9; only 1/2 a second quicker than the 350 but with more power and torque the midrange of the AMG is awesome!!

Personally I would not buy a manual SLK350; not just because the auto is faster, but the 7g tiptronic 'box is much better - especially with the optional paddle shift. Plus the manual will be a lot harder to sell later.... The AMG55 is auto only BTW.

I bought mine from a Mercedes main dealer and got the benefit of the balance of the manufacturer's warranty and an extra one year's MB used car warranty which is incredibly comprehensive and covers wear & tear. I doubt I'll extend it after that and just take a chance. New mercs are a lot more reliable than they used to be.

I'm very pleased with my 350; I have every extra apart from the Command navigation. It's fast, solid, reliable, handles well, looks good and the airscarf heating is just superb with the top down in winter. It is also quite good on fuel for a 3.5 V6......

I think they have improved a lot in the last couple of years though. I thought I had read something in my car's literature about a 30 year corrosion warranty; I could be wrong though:confused: Still it only has to be inspected by a MB dealership to keep it valid; not necessarily serviced. Servicing does not prevent rust, afterall!

Also my last Merc - a 2000 model SLK230 had no signs of rust.

Richard, I think the upkeep of MB servicing is just a money making racket, nothing to do with rust prevention at all, and yes you could be right about the 30 years, but my god how big a 30 year MB service bill going to be...?

Thanks for that Richard. I just assumed the manual was the more desireable, but I'm probably living in the past, where autos were horrible grandad things.

I need to blag a test drive at the main dealers here, try the auto.

Cheers.

You're welcome mate. It's said that Merc generally don't make a decent manual 'box (still!!) so the autos are always worth £££s more (or the manuals are just sold cheaply because no-one wants them:p)

And I see you live in Derby - by coincidence my car came from MB Derby! My friend (who now has the AMG for sale) had it delivered down here and did the deal for me. It's the only car I've ever bought without actually seeing it first:eek: And I wasn't disappointed!!

did you know the only manufacturer to run an auto box in a rally car was mercedes and it never failed
