For anyone who knows the ins and outs of the MOT laws......

I was looking at these replacement headlamp covers and wondering if there would be a problem with passing the MOT due to beam pattern etc, anyone know?

is it just a clear lens??

Yep! Just a clear lens, but apparently the beam is very good indeed.

Info here: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_120.htm

Main concern is they're not emarked - and an insurance assesor would easily spot it. As for mot, depends on the beam pattern I guess - good chance they wouldn't notice they were aftermarket lenses unless they were scrutinising them cos the light output was crap!

I think that safey answers my original concern..... it won't pass the beam test, because the glass lens has the pattern on it, and replacing it with a clear lens will not direct light in the correct direction, thus it will possible(should) fail!

Thanks for all the help on this

anyone got any pictures from a bit further away, so you can see them in context with the car. Can't decide whether I like them or not.

99% sure it will fail mot due to the inability to spread a beam patten on the road therefore unable to align headlights during mot

On an MOT, the lights are tested for - condition, operation, security and correct colour. The headlamps will also be checked to see if the aim is correct.

What you're doing will not be checked on the MOT, unless it affects any of the tests above.

I guess you won't know the beam pattern until they are fitted though, so you might just have to take a chance.

The issue you will have is that you are effectively breaking the E-Marking and type approval of the original headlight design.

The only people interested in that is The Department for Transport, as the car is no longer considered road legal. And i'm sure the chances of them finding out (or caring) is pretty small.

or the police, on a criminal basis, if you're involved in a fatal accident...

I never thought of that.. but could you not plead ignorant saying they were on the car when you bought them and never knew????

Ignorance is no defence... Guess it would mitigate slightly, but at the end of the day it would be your responsibility.

Provided the lights work, the beam pattern is not affected and they are aligned properly, they would pass an MOT.

The only way you are going to tell whether the beam is ok is to try it. For comparison best to try it with the original glass first that will let you get an idea of the pattern, cut off point etc. Just line the car up in front of a wall or garage door then and switch the dip beam on, fit the new covers then try it again.
