Anyone heard about this? Any ideas how it's going to work?

The govt are going to give 2k to anyone who scraps an older car and buys a new or up to 1 year old car.

Now this may not immediately appeal to the Z owner BUT it got me thinking.

Now is the time to buy an old banger off ebay for about 200 quid taxed and tested for 6 months. Then, scrap it and get the money to help buy a small, cheap, nearly new runaround to save the Z from town runs, shopping trips and the like...

DOH! there's no way they are going to be handing out 2K in cash for old bangers. The queue would be from here to Alaska. They will discount your purchase of your new car but it will only apply to "certain" greener models that I can assure you, will have the price bumped up.

Its been happening here for a few months. Huge amount of cash in the pot, and when it is gone, that's it.

Rules are; car must be over 9 years old

you must have owned it (registered to you) for 1 year

car must be scrapped, owners docs presented = certificate issued

(scrappie is allowed to keep certain items for resale)

Take certificate to dealer = 2500 euro discount.

The car you buy must be brand new OR

No more than 1 year old, with only 1 previous owner (ex fleet ok)

No restriction with regards to specific models etc - it's your choice

In reality, dealers are fighting to take them off your hands. Most will do the running around for you. Best bit is, dealers can also offer their own incentives on top. Best at the moment is Peugeot. They are offering 1000 euro cash back too, so up to 3500 euro savings on your choice of car.

I can trade in my sharan in may

Unfortunately I learned of this shortly after paying the 140 euro fee to scrap the old junker I had for running through the winter when it's too cold for the bike. Bloody thing only cost me 50 euro. :headvswal

Sounds like typical Gov hypocriscy, the greenest car you have is the one you already own!

Watch out. Don't get to excited. What this means is that the source of many good parts for classic and near classic cars will dry up. Classics rely almost in their entirity on donor cars. When they're scrapped - it's all over.

You get nowt for nowt with this or any European Govt.

Ask the guys in USA, Oz, South Africa what they think. They are dreading this taking off coz it'll sound the death-knell for us classic lovers. And I speak as one who has a 40 year old Classic Ford.
