I have a TT 1991 and am having some problems and would appreciate some advice on a few things.

The car has done 92K miles and has been driven extremely carefully and the turbos rarely used. The car is always heated up ans cooled down at the start and end of every trip.

The last few weeks I have noticed a few problems. Firstly, there is a very loud tapping noise coming from the drivers side behind the dashboard which could either be in the car itself but can also be heard outside the car, near the drivers side wiper. Its normally only when cold and when idling in traffic.

Secondly, for the last few weeks the car has smelt very strongly of petrol despite being fitted with braided fuel lines. There is little to no smoke at idle and certainly nothing when hot. When boosting there is no smoke however occassionally there is a strange smell.

Today I noticed that the dipstick had popped and checked for vapours from the oil filler. There were no vapours, but the oil was spitting out in small spots and I didnt know if the is normal or not, as I have never run the engine without its oil filler cap on before.

Any advice is appreciated.

Advice is free or else it would be in the paid members section

The petrol smell is usually from the leaking pipes around fuel pressure regulator its between the plenum passenger side. Does the smell go after its warmed up, nip up the hose clips around that and all should be well.

Never heard of the tapping problem in that area though.

My tapping guess is its not behind the dash but the engine itself, probably the lifters sticking, an oil change usually fixes that.

Remove the throttle cover and check all the fuel pipes especially the one at the bottom right under the throttle linkage. (easier to spot with the engine running as it will spray petrol out)

Thanks for the advice. Am I right in thinking the first port of call is the PCV valves in regard to the dipstick popping??

Finally, can anyone confirm if it is normal to spit oil out the filler neck when the cap is off and the engine running??

Cheers Guys.

I personally would try the pcv's 1st, but give it a good service at the same time.

As for the fuel smell, as above. mine had a tiny drip there, couldn't see it all but could definately smell it. Only reason i found it was 'cos when the engine got hot i could see it evaporating as it dripped.

You say that you have braided fuel lines.. were they fitted recently? if so as been said they prob need a tighten up.... but take off the throttle cover and have a good check, with the engine running...

With the tapping noise as Pete said, an oil change might solve it all, that would be my first point of call....

Anything else... just ask....

Cheerz

I am in Darlington.

I think I am going to garage the car for a few months. Then do a full service and change the PCV valves, before heading to Zed World for a full check up and new heater matrix.

Cheers again for the input guys. Can anyone confirm if it is indeed normal to 'spit' small amounts of oil from the oil filler neck with the cap off, whilst the engine is running?

It just has me a bit worried....

Dont panic about the oil from the filler. The camshaft runs directly underneath and acts like a waterwheel and will spit oil up with the cap off.

isn't dipstick popping usually piston ring lands , stuck lifter, or pcv's. My last pearl white z had that prob think it was on cyl 6 and a bent lifter

funny, i was reading it as oil spitting from the dipstick. wierd

yeh i had to read it again to get my head round it.But he deffo said it was spitting oil with the filler cap off.

I'm sure this wasn't truely meant, he was probably just trying to be funny!

That's the trouble with the internet, words can be read in many different ways without tone of voice and/or face expression to accompany them:wack:

Back on topic - dipstick popping - PCV valves.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant is that the dipstick had popped out a bit and put some oil onto the battery. (I have tested that today and it seems to only happen under boost or heavy boost) I did a search on here and read that I should heat up the engine, leave it running and then remove the oil cap and look for oil vapours.

I did check and there were no vapours, which is good, but there were tiny spits of oil coming out and I wasnt sure if that was normal or not.

Thanks for the pointers so far.

Sorry guys, had a bad day my fustration came out through this site!

I'm not normally like that!!

Again a big sorry from Cheshire- seen the error of my ways!!!!!!!

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!Sorry!!!!!!!

Do a compression test on the engine,Post up your readings on here.It may just be the pcv valves with some luck(fingers crossed for you).Check no 6 first, passenger side at the back as it is usually the first piston to suffer bore or ring problems which allows boost pressure into the crankcase which pushes the dipstick out.
