Getting vibration through the steering wheel under light+heavy braking at high speed

not at low speed tho??, in all honisty my brakes dont work... if i had to anker up on the motorway id be dead and so would others, hence im not driving it for a about a month when its in the garage having all the bodywork and the brakes done... and the gear + diff oil done and the heater matrix plumd in (bloody cold!!) so my question is do i just need new discs or are the calipurs dead?

right its not tie rods, that creaking is even when stationary and is coming from the calliper - sounds really bad!!! i even took video you can hear the creaking over the rumble of the engine ill post it up in a min wen i work out how

the calliper is moving only by a mm but its moving, are there big washeres on the back of the calipers where the bolts go thru? cos i have a horrible feeling i forgot to put them back on..... anyone got any thauts on this?

well theres something there i just cant see what look like its different top to bottom

Poor brakes could be down to seized pistons in the calipers. Its pretty common on these cars now given their age. You can buy the seal kits from here http://www.biggred.co.uk

they are pretty cheap and good quality kits.

The vibration could be down to warped discs or to the tension bushes as has already been stated, however after you mentioned the creaking sound there is a possibility that your front suspension arms are fractured around tie bar mounting. Mine were making the exact same noise that you describe.

Have a look at this thread http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=22382

Look at the bottom suspension arm at the point where the tension arm meets, it has two bolts at this point, this is a known to be a weak point here.

As Ossian says seized pistons are favourite in these cars. I had the same. If you find it hard to push back the pistons to fit new pads then this can be the reason. Tried skimming the discs but it did not get done correctly and juddering remained. New discs cured the juddering and vibration. But I found the 2 inner caliper pistons both sides were really stiff and it took massive pressure to pop those pistons to change the seals. The outer bellows were perished. You can clean up the pistons but once the rust has broken the machined surface layer the piston is pitted and going to rust again at that point. When the scarred bit reaches the seals and contacts air and moisture again it will seize again and once more you have crap brakes. The pressure from the working pistons then cause the other side of the disc to heat normally whereas the stuck pistons do nothing leaving that side colder. Result unevenly heated brakes under braking and next thing is a warp and juddering.

I am convinced that when most people refer to 300zx brakes as crap then this is the problem. The only have half a caliper each side working. When they are working properly they are pretty good but obviously not up to track work with repeated hard braking.

New pistons are available. they are same size as used on Scoobys

I have some to be fitted - Box says BCP4025

was this weldable?

was this weldable?

Stressed components shouldnt really be welded, and when you see the state of the fractures on these you wouldnt really want to weld them.

Far better getting a hold of some good second hand ones

good point there not overly expencive, thing is it makes the creeking noise when its stationary too more so really and if you put your ear next to the callipur it sounds like its coming from that,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Mate, If you're not sure about your brakes take it to a garage and get them checked over. Better to be safe than sorry.

don't trust garages never have never will - i trust the mechanic i grew up with and helped set up his business and i trust my 2 years city and guilds no one else - iv seen some hurrendus things done in garages when i was an apprentis and that was in both high street and back street garages
