Hi,

This is one for anyone who is or works with a MOT tester.

I'm going away for two weeks and during this period the MOT on my Jeep is due. How far ahead of the due date can you arrange for a MOT to be done and will the test certificate be valid from the original due date or the date at which the test is conducted?

Many thanks!

Dan

I'm neither - but it's 28 days ahead, and valid from the expiry of the current one...

Thanks very much for the info Rich - much appreciated. Guess I can get it done well before I go then! :)

Cheers!

So you could have a 13 month MOT cert?

Theoretically yes but in practice no.

Even if you get your car MOT'd 28-days prior to the expiry date of the current valit certificate, the new certificate valitidy will be dated from the expiry date of the old certificate.

For example:

Expiry date current MOT certificate: 1-MARCH-09

Date MOT test: 4-FEB-09

Valid from date on NEW MOT certificate: 1-MARCH-09

So, still a 12 month certificate despite the fact that you got it 1 month before the expiry of the old certificate.

Hope that makes sense.

On your MOT certificate it tells you the first date you can take your vehicle for a test.

Actually, I replied slightly wrong - as long as you present your current certificate it will have the current date on but expire 12 months from the expiry date of the last one - so it is possible to have a 13 month mot...

As the tests are logged at VOSA the computer will show the predicted expiry date and start the new one from this date if presented early.

Exactly - you no longer need to present the old one now they are all logged with VOSA. If you take it in up to a month early the computer will automatically date the new certificate to expire 12 months from the expiry of the old one on record.

It also works with first MOTs on 3 year old cars - you now get the MOT to run 12 months from the date your car was 3 years old, not the date you have it MOTd.

Richard:)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Just be aware that the earliest date you can take your car for test and preserve the expiry date is 1 month minus a day.

If you take it in any earlier you lose the additional time and the test will only be valid for 12 months. Lots of people get caught out with this and lose out on the extra month for the sake of a couple of days.

TRUE^^^^ The computer warns you that the test is to early to recieve credits.
