the Z has developed a grinding noise coming from underneath since its prang on ice :(

quick summery...

hit a post on o/s/f bumper and scratched down the wing

couldn't drive over about 20mph

damaged intercooler replaced

drove like normal for a couple of days then...

all of a suddden there is a nasty grinding noise coming from the front somewhere?

its an auto but seems to find all the gears fine.

turn the car off and restart and its ok for a day or so then happens again.

this is getting more frequent

any ideas??

Ok need some more details to help:

1 ) Is the noise evident when the engine is running but stationary, or when you move off?

2 ) Does the sound vary with road speed or is it engine speed related?

3) Does the noise get louder as you speed up or rev up or is it a constant level?

4 ) Does the noise occur in reverse, forward or both?

1. The noise starts when traveling but when you stop it carries on

2/3. It stays at a constant level, doesnt increase wih speed or revs

3. Havent tried reversing, only going forward.

it does sound awful though :(

anything else you want to know to try and help diagnose?

thanks :)

could it possibly be a sticky starter solenoid which leaves the starter cog sticking in the flywheel as it's spinning?

i only ask as my skyline had a similar noise but only on startup, it'd rattle and chatter for a few seconds until the cog moved back in,once i stripped it out and cleaned it after reading it was a common problem on R33's it was fine after that, they eem to get hellova dirty and built up with crud

it seems to start after the car has been running for some time though.

it makes a noise till i actually pull over and stop.

needless to say it now parked up till i can get some ideas of what could be wrong
