The whole point of the subs is not to be detected, hence why they didn't "see" each other.

 

What is stunning is the fact that they were both operating in the same area without letting each other know. According to the article, the UK & US have an arrangement so as to avoid this type of thing.

Problem was the French sub is always in reverse! Makes it tougher to see where your going....
