I am currently a self employed IT contractor and my current contract comes to an end next week as the company (capgemini) are having a cull of as many staff as possible.

I have been looking around but haven't found anything yet.

Now capgemini have just offered me a permanent job - but at 60% less than my contract rate.

I wouldn't be tempted (i do feel quite insulted) but the markets are really bad at the moment.

What would you guys do?

Take the job mate, it is so hard trying to get work at the moment

Grab it with both hands

At least it would be a bit of bread and butter Dosh coming in whilst you look for else where

^ what they said ^

Until something better comes up, its a bit of income that will keep you going. Might not be able to shop at Marks & Spencer, but Sainsbury's ain't that bad :D

A 60% drop from Contract to perm is a little high, I would have said 45-50% was the norm 6-9 months ago but these are wierd times.

I would take the job. I buy contract resource for my firm and our requirements have gone from £600k pa in previous years to £100k this year. Coupled to that rates have dropped 50% in the last 4-6 weeks !

As everyone else has said, take it. The contract market is pants at the mo and the permenant market in IT is going to see quite a few redundancies very soon.

take it mate dont hesitate!!!

i just took a job today employed now still valeting but not self emplyed mobile instead i now work for vauxhall doing there cars! less money per day but its guranteed & in this present market not alot is guranteed? especially when my trade was a bit of a luxuary to most people!

take it & if the market picks up in a year or so you can try the self employed road again!

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear about your predicament. I've just been told that a close friend who ,works for CapGemini in Italy, will be made redundant so the cull has definitely started.

I would take the permanent role just to make sure you've got something coming in. The way I see it, a permanent role is only as "permanent" as you want it to be. Should you find a better paid contract role in the near future then you can always resign from CapG. Like everybody else says - having a job (any job) is better than no job at all at the moment. My wife has been unable to find employment for 6 months and she's a highly experienced marketing/communications manager. These are crazy times indeed.

Good luck.

Dan

Hi, I also work for one of the top 5 IT companies in the UK on a perm contract, I too used to be a contractor in the SAP erp system but due to wanting a more stable income over a longer period of time I went for a perm position.

I am not sure in what sector of IT you work in but in the SAP arena (which is one of the highest paid in the sector for it) the daily rate dropped quite a bit on average.

The going rate at the moment is approx £500 a day (not including expenses ) but with the package I was offered (company car, pension and all that sort of jazz) I was also down by approx 50% but now I do not have the hassle of constantly looking for work but the good side, I get training (which with SAP is not cheap) 35 days paid holiday, working from home and the odd sick day (paid ;)).

when I was contracting I lived for work, it was always, work work and more work, if I had a day off I would be thinking 'crap I am loosing out on £xxx today' and this was not to good for my personal life.

I would take it mate and as mentioned, if it does not work out or when the market picks up you can always leave.

My opinion anyway, hope it works out for you in these hard times.

I did exactly the same last year fella, and so glad I did. Sit back and wait out the crap times in a nice perm job with the security. Then in a few years go back out contracting and bring the cash back in.

Yup; I agree with all the above. Take the job - you'll get a regular salary and all the benefits and security of employment (like paid holidays).

You can still look for something better too, but whilst in paid employment the pressure is off you.

Good luck, whatever you decide mate!

Richard:smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i agree

take the job m8

any income is better than no income.

can you really afford to sit around and have no money coming in?
