Sometimes when i goto start my car it makes an awfull noise, the same noise it makes if you turn the key when the car is already started.

It does this once or twice then starts as normal.

WHY?

any ideas? starter motor?

Starter motor enagement spring is failing and not engaging properly, or it has come loose against the gearbox. Its common for one of the bolts to work its way loose, allowing the starter motor to move about which often snaps one top mounting point.

tighten up the starter and see if that helps ?

if not remove it and inspect the starter and flywheel ring gear

Dang, more work!

Stupid question, to get access to the starter motor do i have to be underneath the car?

Happened to me lol, the noise it made was pretty badass!

Bolted back up again, all good!

mine also does it. but only when it is really really cold. Its fine most of the time. Are the easy to get to or is it a ramp job?

My slicktop TT auto has done it on and off for 7 years. I have just got used to engaging the ignition switch position and pausing for a second or two before operating starter motor and it usually doesn't happen. However I am in the throws of another autobox replacement and changing flex plate at the same time. It used to be a common problem with Triumph 2000/2.5 Pi autos where the starter pinion wears the drive plate ring gear teeth in common resting places.

happened to me a long time ago, found if you turn the key and just pause for a moment with Battery on before turning it on its usually fine :D
